The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Tsugaki - 2008-07-18 I finally finished Kanji! I started last november, quit 2 or 3 times, and now, I have finally finished learning the kanji! Anyways, I will still be reviewing a ton to retain what I've learned, but it is still good to know I won't have to add more kanji (until I go on to RTK3, which will be a LONG time from now). Thank you so much everyone here! I can easily say I would have not finished the kanji without this support forum and all of your stories! A note to all the people still working on Heisig: Be consistent and you will finish! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Okonomiyaki - 2008-07-19 I just finished! It's a bit embarrassing to say when I started, because I had big gaps where I didn't study (I generally only ever had time to study in the summer). I will say that I did half the book in the past few months. Thanks so much for this site! I'd be nowhere near finished without it ![]() Now the real work begins... The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - ziggy - 2008-07-19 やった!! It feels so good to be done at last! I got the book for Christmas last year...did about 20 a day for a while, slipped and lost a few months, then somehow got fired up and did 50-60 a day until the finish line. Madness! ![]() I have to say this site has been an amazing help and a great source of inspiration. Good luck to everyone still working on the book and congrats to all who have finished! ありがとうございました! Thanks for all the support and for enduring my spam! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Shibo - 2008-07-22 Woo, way to go Mentat! I knew you could do it! It's been quite the journey for you, thanks for sharing it with us. ^^ The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - iSoron - 2008-07-23 Congratulations, Mentat! Nice to see yet another Brazilian finishing Heisig! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Mcjon01 - 2008-07-27 HAHAHAHA, done! Sure, I added the last 150 in an all-out kanji blitz today, and my review stacks are going to be massive for a while, but dang that "Congratulations, deck finished!" message feels good. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - QuackingShoe - 2008-07-29 Whew, that took long enough. It started off really easy, but those last 2041 were a real bitch, eh? The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - snallygaster - 2008-07-30 Well, I guess I can mention that I finally finished RTK a couple of weeks ago... About two years after I started! Of course, I took a few extended breaks during that time (had other stuff to deal with). I wish I had forced myself to go a bit faster, but on the other hand, my review stack is insignificant, and it feels nice to be able to focus on actual vocab. Keep up your reviews, people! The last 500 are the HARDEST! For me the last 500 (ish) were easy because I could see the finish line and eagerly wanted to get there. Well.. I think the last 2032 were a real bitch.
The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - alyks - 2008-07-30 I started out all enthusiastic, getting up early and getting done with my fifty by mid day. Forty days later I'm just so worn out from doing it, I can barely finish my reviews at the end of the day. I only have 6 days left if I keep going, that's the killer. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - mentat_kgs - 2008-07-31 Not only 6 days. You'll have to review them for as long as you take to study their use and practice them with real japanese. Review load drops dramacticaly, tought. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - cescoz - 2008-08-02 Last 50 Today or tomorrow I'll be here, finally!!! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Watson - 2008-08-02 Just finished about three minutes ago! Now to review until I get them all into at least column 3 or so... The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - cescoz - 2008-08-03 Finished!!! I'm so happy of this, but I have to work on reviews, especially for the last 400. I started japanese on september 07 thanks to anime and for curiosity. The first thing that I studied were the kana with traditional method, but then I started to know about kanji and look for the best methods on internet. In January I started studying kanji with the pdf of the first pages of the book rtk.The method for me wasn't new,I'v used the same mnemonics tricks at school for date and difficult words but for kanji or big task never. At the end of march I bought the book from Internet and contiunued the study(I was at...maybe 300).Working one month on and one month off,at the half of june I was at 600 cause school. Then I decided to finish the book as soon as possible, working constantly and...this is the result...finished!!! However I was able to finish the book thanks to my free time(I'm sixteen...seventeen at the end of august),I confess this because my patience isn't that great and I thought of leave the study of kanji at least 3 times a week from February!(^^) From now I'll be reviewing with Anki for problem with my internet connection but I'll continue to frequent this super site!!! Before starting with sentences I want review all the kanji, especially the problematics and ,I don't know when but for sure I'll do the third book and more...I love kanji in general. What I recommend in my very little experince is to not underestimate the true immersion in the language and to don't stop on your study(I stopped more than 4 times but not for too long fortunately).Do reviews immediately after the study session of kanji and not "after". I started to listen and watching only japanese and ever japanese(AJATT way,at least 8 hours a day) one or two weeks ago and belive me, do miracles!!! If you can, study also the japanese songs that you like,I mean search for the kanji lyric and the translation; then study the on and kun yomi pronunciations. After that write down in a sheet all the lyric in kanji,(if you want use an srs) it's very motivating at the beginning... Thanks to all on this site for motivating me 皆さん頑張れよ!!! The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - glacier - 2008-08-03 So encouraging to see people finishing! I'm at about 127, and started a few months ago. It's slow going because I have too much else going on in my life right now--work and family (and encroaching age!--I turned 51 a few days ago) but my goal is to get through book 1 by February (when I visit Japan again), and book 2 by next December (so I can take JLPT Level 2). The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - plumage - 2008-08-04 question: are those of you who "finish" simply celebrating having added the final kanji in the book to your stack? upon finishing, what retention rate are you getting, say, the very next day (day 1 of post-rtk review)? not to pooh-pooh your accomplishment, but if i finished the book with a 40% retention rate, i don't know if i'd be very happy. ideally, something in the 80% range *and* finishing would make me feel like i actually accomplished the goal. again, not accusing, just asking. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - Mcjon01 - 2008-08-04 Anki says my long-term retention rate is at 98%, with my total retention rate at around 90%. Of course, I fail every card the first time I see it so that I can test it again a few minutes later, so that probably messes with the numbers. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - cescoz - 2008-08-04 My retention is around 85% but 15 days are more enough to boost it at 90%-95%,it's only question of review and in my case concentrate on the last 200 a little more The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - mentat_kgs - 2008-08-04 For me it was: putting all the kanjis in the SRS without skipping or cheating the reviews. I think it is good enough. But I still have a long way to go, of course. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - QuackingShoe - 2008-08-04 Sounds pretty accusing no matter how you amend it. Be that as it may, I celebrated 'finishing' it when I put the last kanji in the SRS simply because it meant I could finally stop adding kanji and start doing something that wasn't akin to shoving a drill into my face. It doesn't particularly matter to me when they're all in 'the fourth stack' or whatever - I just care about not having to add anymore. Retention holds around 90%, moving higher as the most recent couple hundred settle. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - sfekas - 2008-08-06 Woo hoo!!!!! I just finished* the book! 53 days from end to end, although I had a head start, since I learned a few hundred when I studied Japanese in college. A special thanks to alyks, whose challenge got me to accelerate my pace and finish a few days earlier than expected. Now I just have to fight through a couple days of 200+ card reviews (and of course continue reviewing until I get almost everything into the last box). At least I won't be adding new cards at the same time. Since I make the best progress when I have concrete goals, I hereby state that I will take JLPT level 2 or 2.5 in 2009. Wish me luck. *Where "finished" = added kanji 2042 to the SRS without cheating and while maintaining a decent review level (80-90%), just in case anyone was wondering. The "I just finished RTK1, please congratulate me" thread. - alyks - 2008-08-06 If I hadn't have had a migraine, TWO DAYS IN A ROW, it wouldn't have been that easy for you to win. Whatever. Congratulations, you deserve it. Only a hundred more before I'm here also. |
