Logitech Squeezebox-- Looking For Live 日本語 Streams - rich_f - 2012-04-02

I picked up a Logitech Squeezebox radio a while back, because I like the form factor. The sound is good enough for me, and with the battery, it's highly portable. It's a little buggy, but I can live with it. The portability is the important part for me. I can lug it all over the house, unlike my PC; my laptop has awful sound, and I don't want to carry it around the house, either; and I don't want to wear headphones all day if I don't have to.

Naturally, the podcast thread has been very useful in adding podcasts I can just listen to right from their RSS feed podcast player, but what I'm really looking for are good sources for streaming Japanese audio, preferably news. (But I will take what I can get.)

There are NHK streams listed on the device, but they're all in everything *but* Japanese, or so it seems, and in order to access any Japanese content on NHK, you need to be 国内, which doesn't work for those of us who are overseas.

I have managed to find some of the smaller stations, like MID-FM in Nagoya, the station in Okazaki, and a few others, but I'm not having any luck finding anything that will work for the major media outlets. (Especially Tokyo.)

Am I just out of luck, or should I just bite the bullet and set up a JP proxy? And if so, are there any proxy services you all would recommend based on experience?

Not an answer to your question, but I thought you might want to know about the radio-sure site, which has lots of radio streams in every language I've bothered to check for.

Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can get to work with the Squeezebox.

I did manage to dig up a working "Latest News in Japanese" URL that will work with the SB (or with anything that uses WMP.)

Is the script for this latest news available?

Yeah, from NHK World.

EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean now. Hmm... I don't know. Probably not. The news is aimed at native speakers, not learners. Check the site and see what's there.

This is what I use mostly, along with this site. They both have mainly talk radio, but I've caught news shows occationally.

Yeah, there's a TuneIn app for the Squeezebox--in fact, TuneIn is what the system uses to do most of its station searches. The problem is that sometimes the format isn't compatible (for whatever reason), or the station has switched to Radiko.jp (which doesn't work outside of Japan, from what I gather), or the stream just doesn't work.

Using TuneIn is about a 50/50 shot. That said, it's the most useful of the apps so far, because you browse on their website and save to your presets on the SB. You need to register the app at mysqueezebox.com first with your login/password, but after that, it will sync with your SB.

I'm getting increasingly frustrated by radiko, though. -_- It's like a great radio wall of Japan.
