Wow, that's a long time. I'm envious Big Grin

I was thinking about buying an ipod anyway (just not the touch one - although I have a mp3 player). I'll have a closer look at it and see what else that ipod type can do for me.
I'd love to have a dictionary, too, but I already have a CASIO ExWord, so that's that.

So can I use Anki just as usually and synchronize it with my PC somehow?
Is it limited somehow because it's not a PC version, only an ipod version?

It's nothing like the PC version, but it will let you do reviews & sync.

You can review on it, you can save your deck, and you can sync. Other features are certainly possible, but not implemented yet.

You can buy an 8gb one if you want - you don't need that much space to run Anki. If you want to ask other users about it, bring it up on the Anki forum. There's a thread related to the ipod version already.

What are the pros and cons of using an iphone touch instead of a PDA/Handheld?

the iPod touch is a nice device because it's easy to hack, has built in wireless, a unix backend and is quite small. A zaurus may be a nice option too though - I simply haven't had the chance to test one. You're probably best avoiding a windows mobile PDA - Anki support is somewhat lacking there it seems.

Can I jailbreak ANY ipod touch? Sounds complicated, but if other people can do it, then why shouldn't I, right? Smile

Oh, and would I need internet connection to be able to use that anki version or is it only that I need an internet connection to get the whole hack thing done once?

If I want to watch movies etc. on an ipod do I have to "decode" normal video files first? I have read something about ipod-format movies.

With a zaurus I would be able to run a somewhat "full" anki version, right?

Maybe I should just wait for a while and see what happens to the anki version for the ipod touch / iphone?! Wink

Yeah, I have a Japanese iPod touch. Jailbreaking is pretty simple - find the right app, read the instructions, run it.

You need wireless access to a) install Anki on it and b) to copy your deck back and forth or synchronize. Since the client doesn't support adding cards yet, only reviewing, if you don't have intermittent access to wireless so you can update your deck, it's not very useful.

Outside of my area of expertise I'm afraid - though there's probably some video player available.

The same backend runs on all versions of Anki. But each platform provides a different GUI toolkit. The Zaurus only provides qt3, so it's not possible to run the desktop client on a Zaurus either (nor would you want to - it'd be too slow!)

Nothing in the program depends on the iPhone. It could be run on a windows mobile or zaurus device too, if you had the right environment set up. Since I lack such a device, instructions will need to be provided by someone else.

One thing that may drastically expand my options would be if I had a Linux handheld that would run the Linux Anki, and this could use the decks made on the Windows version on my computer.

Check out the Nokia n770 and n800 internet tablets. Touchscreen, running linux and can be modified hevily. Should run anki and can sync with your online anki account

I don't have wireless lan. So right now there's no way to synchronize the deck with the one on your pc without wifi connection? :/

I think there's a program that lets you sync over the sync cable, so it's not necessarily impossible.

Everything is so spread out now across all the different forums and it seems like there are a few different side projects. What I REALLY want is a portable device (with instant power on) that supports EBWing dictionaries and Anki. This would be the ultimate tool for any japanese learner. Touch screen or stylus would be ideal so you can draw kanji when you dont know how to read them. Is there anything at this stage that fufils this need?

After a long hiatus, I decided to upgrade my Zaurus to the latest version of ankiQt (alpha12), released just 2 days ago. I think I upgraded everything that needed to, but when I run anki_qpe_launcher.py, I now get the following stacktrace: Something seems to be not in sync?

Ah, this is an easy one.

Delete your ~/.ankiqt-lite file, and restart Anki.

Let me know if that helps. I'll add it to the Wiki.

I'm having an odd problem with Anki on my Zaurus now. Things were working fine the other day, but I finally cleared my deck and got the 'congrats' with the message that I would have new cards to review tomorrow. However, even after two days, when I open my deck, all I get is the congrats screen but the amount of reviews is rising. I'm at work now, so I'll try and wash the deck through my PC version of Anki and see if I can get it running again.

EDIT: I also just opened my backup of the deck, and even though I haven't touched it in weeks, I get the Congrats screen for that too. I guess there's a file somewhere I have to delete?
