"primitives" versus radicals - Dragg - 2007-11-05 Are Heisig's primitives generally different than the commonly-accepted radicals that Japanese people use to look up Kanji in a dictionary? If they are very different, how much of a problem, if any, does this pose to the serious student later on? In this sense, I wonder what a Japanese native speaker would think of the Heisig method. "primitives" versus radicals - JimmySeal - 2007-11-05 Many of the primitives are not radicals, but most radicals show up as primitives. I'd say the Heisig method poses no problem to a serious learner later on and in fact is quite helpful when one does start learning about radicals. Most Japanese people don't give much thought to radicals, and Heisig graduates generally know more about radicals than the typical Japanese person, without ever having studied them specifically. "primitives" versus radicals - ファブリス - 2007-11-06 I second JimmySeal. You learn nearly all radicals within RtK Volume 1, only they have different names. Some people don't like the fact that radicals get "fancy" names, but if you look closely Heisig often chose images that were related in one way or another. True, there are a few exceptions, were Heisig chose a completely unrelated meaning for the radical/primitive. What Heisig did with primitives is create more recognisable and learnable combinations of radicals, which become one primitive, but even those he teaches you from the building blocks of the simple primitives/radicals introduced earlier. Personally I would have loved to see an index with the Japanese names for the radicals as an addendum to RtK1. I also wanted to put up such a resource on this site, but never got around to it, basically make a simple table that takes each primitive, gives the corresponding radical(s), and original Japanese name. I also wanted to put up such a resource on this site, but never got around to it, basically make a simple table that takes each primitive, gives the corresponding radical(s), and original Japanese name. Here is an equivalents list based on the 214 radicals. First a few notes: 1) All but 4 of the 214 radicals appear in Heisig's books. They are 鬥鬯黹龠 and are quite rare (鬯 is in new editions). 2) Of the 210 radicals that appear in Heisig, 207 have been given names. The other three are 禸髟鬲(suggestions: "sling", "hairstyle" and "tripod" respectively.) 3) Some radicals have variant forms For example 齊 is equivalent to 斉. Due to various revisions over the years the "standard" forms of a few radicals are rarely encountered. I've added some of the more common variants below. 4) Most radicals have acquired a number of different names over the years. I've tried to limit this list to the most common names, and also those which work best when doing a multi-radical search in electronic versions of the Kanjigen dictionary. 5) Depending on the font you are using, a few characters may not display properly. 6) (Edit) If you would like the data below in spreadsheet format, click here. The order is: Radical number -- Radical -- Common variant as used in Heisig (if any) -- Stroke count -- Name(s) in kana -- Heisig's name(s) 1 一 1 いち one, floor, ceiling 2 丨 1 ぼう walking stick, cane 3 Could you send me this in spreadsheet format, or just plain text, tab/comma separated? I could make this into a page on the site, in a fancy table. If I can load it into the database I could also make a simple, random flashcard test on the radicals/primitives and their Japanese names. "primitives" versus radicals - Dragg - 2007-11-07 Thanks Katsuo. Great list. "primitives" versus radicals - Teskal - 2009-12-09 Here a list I made a while ago.
