2lb asus ?200/$400 laptop! throw your ppc and denki jisyous away - thegeezer3 - 2007-11-04

just seen this on engadget and couldnt believe what i was reading. Asus have come up with a super cheap laptop at only 2lbs for ?200. Its got its limitations such as only having a 4gb hard drive and small screen but it looks PORTABLE for a fraction of the price you'd pay.

I'm seriously considering getting one of these instead of a new ppc and getting anki on it with my dictionary software. The only problem is id have to use the mouse to draw my kanji instead of a stylus like on a ppc but it looks schweeet

I haven't seen anything for computer that matches what even fairly cheap denshi jisho have. However a PC can do a LOT a denshi jisho can't do.

imo you might as well compare a laptop computer to a cellphone. They are mutually exclusive devices.

btw it's denshi jisho, not denki. The difference is the same as between electronic and electric (The presence of microchips vs just using electricity generally).

Oh man I want that. My biggest mistake before coming to Japan, was buying a monster sized laptop thinking I would just leave it at home as a desktop replacement. I end up taking it everywhere and the thing weighs 12KG when in its laptop bag! In comparison my bike weighs 11.4KG. Thanks for that post, I just found my Christmas present to myself.

Two pounds? My laptop is four pounds and I consider it a lean beast. Very nice indeed. Get a portable broadband deal and it'll practically be a really big cellphone, and cost just as much, too.

dilandau23, that sounds painful, truly.

"I haven't seen anything for computer that matches what even fairly cheap denshi jisho have."

wow and i was really impressed by having the green dragon on my Pocket PC especially with the ability to draw kanji on the screen, view multiple dictionaries under one roof, be able to search unknown words in definitions in any of my dictionaries, save them to a word list.

5 years ago i was considering a denshi jisho but i heard of so many complaints from begninners about not knowing how to pronounce the various words in the definitions as it was all in kanji. Apparently the dictionaries didnt let you highlight those unknown words and search them (i.e. jump ) apart from the uber canon word tank which was top dollar then (more than a ppc and green dragon) . Thats probably chnaged now. But is there something else that im missing from a typical denshi jisho? I can't imagine how much more you would need apart from those core functions the ppc allows.

The main benefit of this asus is being able to type comfortably (after a couple of days of practice anyway). This will allow you to make new flashcards on the go. With Pocket PCs using the stylus or tap keyboard is so slooow.

One thing im not so hot on is the resolution. 800*??? will cause viewing problems/hindrances with web pages designed at 1024 * ??? resolutions and although you could install opera (it is opera isnt it?) i dont think rikaichan is available for it ... or is it?

!Off Topic Warning!

I'm currently thinking of getting a notebook with the same sort of mindset - keep it as a desktop alternative and getting a big heavy duty one (like a dell XPS).

but what can you get that's decent that isn't big in the notebook world?

If I was buying a new computer, I'd be tempted by a 13" MacBook. Very reasonably priced and as you're a "teacher" you'd qualify for the Education discount. 15% if my memory serves me correctly.

if your getting a laptop for the sole purpose of replacing your desktop why is size important?

or are you considering carrying it about with you?
