I still do not get it what am I suposed to do ? (SRS) - Doctorhabib - 2012-05-20

Look you guys, I have allot of sentences in Japanese in my Anki Decks.

But when I see a sentence what am I suposed to do ?

I have a card like this:

Front:Japanese sentence
Back :English translation, Japanese with kanji explained .

How do I learn a card like that?

what do I do? do I read it out loud ?Do I just write it down? Do I cram it in my head?Do I just translate it? what are the most effective steps to take so that I learn best.

And when I review it some time later what steps am I suposed to take next?

What you are supposed to do really depends on your level and what you want to get out of studying Japanese.

Do you mind letting us know what level you are at and what kind of goals you have?

The most regular way I guess is that you pass the card as long as you understand the sentence. You don't have to be able to reproduce the grammar rules of it later on, as long as you understand what the sentence says and what the words mean at the time of review, you've passed.

That's the basic, ajatt-ish way of reviewing them, I think. If you want to be as effective as you could be then it all depends on your aims, like kitsune said.

you're supposed to understand it... not translate it.

Well , I manage basic conversations with Japanese people pretty well. I watch Anime without subtitles and I understand it decently I always know what its about but I often miss fast paced specific dialoges that use words in an odd sentence formulation or I just simply do not know the words well .

I also do pretty well with Dramas but once again just the general premise of the episode.

I know about 900 kanji for now ( still studying)

Im not sure how I should call my level, something about intermediate.

My main goal in the end is to reconize litarly every word on a podcast,Anime, drama or when someone talks to me in Japanese .

My next level would be to produce what I reconize ofcourse.

@ TwoMoreCharacters :Really ? I feel like im doing to little when I do that.

Sounds like you're at a pretty high level and know your grammar well. My advice for you is to highlight a specific word in your sentence that you want to learn and concentrate on that.

As for myself. I've reached the level where I just practice vocabulary so my entire deck is individual words with the sentence plugin that I rarely look at.

What is your criteria for picking sentences to learn? I think the best is helping you learn drama or anime as those sources lead to other training aids (ripped audio, scripts, further episodes).

After that point, it becomes getting useful words and phrases that round out your Japanese. For sentences, make sure you can pronounce the entire thing and know the meaning of each word and phrase. The answer side should have the appropriate definitions in case you get it wrong and need a reminder.
