MCD's? - Inny Jan - 2012-03-31

@Tori-kun

What I did/do was to get this deck with sentences from D[BIA]JG and use it as a base to create my grammar items. A typical grammar card looks like:

Q:
I wish I had asked my teacher.
先生に[...]。

A:
先生に聞けばよかった。
せんせい・に・き・けばよかった。

I'm not trying to derail this thread, but a GitHub user named custommonkey added Mecab support to the MCD plugin for Anki 1. This should make it easier and faster to make these things.

Bugs still go to me. Smile

just wanted to say that the plugin is kickass. it saves me lots of time.

I tried MCDs as my first Anki-based study method. I would not recommend them. I'm sure they have their uses, but for me they were incredibly inefficient. They also seem to go against a lot of AJATT's general philosophy (do recognition, not production - production will come later). Production is ***** hard for freshly learnt vocabulary, and I found that I was forgetting the same cards continuously without improving - and not just a few cards. Some things stuck, sure, but it was frustrating and inefficient.

Anyway, I ditched them for recognition-based subs2srs decks, which are so much less painful.

I had a similar experience. MCDs were hard to create, and took forever to use. I now use a custom vocab recognition deck with example sentences, pulled either from subs2srs or from reading material. Goes a lot faster, which means I spend more of my Japanese time with Japanese, and less with Anki.

Aikynaro, do you mean you're solely using subs2srs imports? How are you dividing it? Do you import everything into one massive-assed deck, or have different decks for each show? Do you use 日本語字幕 alone, or English subtitles as well?

Just curious. I usually just pull subs2srs material into my vocab deck. However, I started fooling around today with drilling a single show (GTO) via subs2srs import, to see if drilling one suck deck every day helps with my audio recognition. So I'm open to ideas.

One deck - with tags (from the show name/episode number) I don't see why you would need multiple decks. You can just use the cram function if you want to just work on one show.
I have the English subtitle imported, but not on the card. If I want to see it, I look at the edit screen. Good for double checking, but don't want to rely on it too much.

And yeah - solely using subs2srs. No sense in doing work myself if I have a nice program that can do it all for me.

I'm on Anki2, so I have more slicing-and-dicing options. I think I'll try creating a single subs2srs deck, but define each of the episodes as sub-decks.

GREAT idea on keeping the English on the edit page!

I personally like this a lot... it's like more active yet sometimes it's more passive (more fun and easier) than the normal deck.

so according to anki I made it 1.5 years ago
I have 539 cards right now

So i'm gonna post my example...
1. I do monolingual because I'm at that level.... I've been monolingual for 3/4 years
2. sometimes I don't "really" do my reviews in the normal one where you have the vocab card or the sentence card.. .I just read it but I don't really engage in it so I don't know it but for some reason I keep pressing 2 or 3 on some of them lol.

Lately I've been taking cards that I've been ignoring/"not really know but want to know" in my normal deck into this deck.
by this i mean that no matter how many times i see it in my deck i don't remember the word or the defintion ie i run into it in native media and look it up again and then realize heyz the definition sounds familiar. sometimes it's because the word has many syllables (so I just skim it? I don't really engage in reading each syllable) or the sounds of the word throws me off. So I kill syllables or put the word and the definition in the front and blank out parts of the definition.

i JUST Wanted to mention another format i use for MCD. Sometime when i fail vocabulary or sentence card I also add it to the MCD deck. On the front is what's on the front and the back for the word/sentence deck and what I blank out is easy/obvious parts of the definition.. It really makes me read/notice the definition even though I'm not even blanking out "hard" parts.

Recently I made
Front:
_疑 かいぎ
物事の意味・価値、また
自他の存在や見__などについて疑いを持つ

Back:
懐 , 解
