Starting over with JApanese, need help - sukiriso - 2012-03-04

So I gave up apparently two+ years ago, I did it the AJATT way or whatever, RTK first, got about 1.5k in, and decided I needed to be in japan to learn it properly.
I want to start over again but I woud like some pointers on where to start, is RTK first still a good thing? Or human japanese? any tips appreciated.

I would do RTK in conjunction with a basic textbook like the genki series.

I just came back after a 2 year absence as well. I'm starting with doing RTK and at the same time Pimsleur. Mostly because you can complete them both in about the same time frame (3 months) and well, I might as well be getting some foundation in basic communication and listening while I concentrate on the kanji. At least this way I'm getting some 'real Japanese' in while I study the characters.

Those are my main focus at the moment, but I'm also leaving Japanese podcasts rolling most of the time and doing a quick read-through of Japanese the Manga way to get an intro to grammar (not really spending a ton of time or mental energy on this for now though... trying to keep most of my mental focus on the kanji).

When those are done, I'll be diving into Core2k/6k and using Japanese the Manga Way and DBJG as references.

My best advice is, if you have cards on this site or in Anki with stats from before, DON'T delete them and start from scratch. I made that mistake (I had gotten about 600 in the first time). I'm back up in the late 400's now, but I'm finding that even after 2 years, quite a few of these kanji are still crystal clear in my memory, but I've reset all my progress in anki to 0, which was stupid.

Yeah I still have some on this site, I didn't getup to where I got with Anki, but a decent amount. I am on a totally different computer now so no Anki for me, but thanks for the quick reply. I was just about to delete the ones I had on here.
The Genki and RTK seems like a great idea, should I start from the first Kanji in RTK though?

I think you can skip around as you need since you have a lot of experience with RTK.

Awesome, thanks a ton, going to get started on it tomorrow! Thanks again for the quick responses.

Well, your situation might be different since you did most of your stuff on anki (like me) but now you no longer have it. What i was going to say was to open the "browse deck" feature and just go down your list and look at each one that you have records for. Many will still be familiar or may not be immediately obvious, but after looking at the story it comes back to you. These you'd leave alone and review them as normal, referring back to RTK to jog your memory and strengthen the stories if you get stuck. Any that are completely lost to you you can suspend. This way you can kind of start back from frame 1, and work your way through reminding yourself of the familiar ones, and just unsuspend the 'lost' ones as you relearn them.

I don't know how you'd adapt that to the site's system. I haven't used it in years. But, you CAN always start from scratch...
