Hunger Games - Japanese novel - chamcham - 2012-03-03

With all the "Hunger Games" fever this month, there is still
time to read the book before seeing the movie.

Anyway, I just found out that there is a Japanese translation
of the novel.

Check it out:

Forget Hunger Games, read the book Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. You can find English translations pretty easy, and when your done you can watch the movie.

I wouldn't say the Battle Royale movie is good by any means. Lots of people like it for some reason that I have yet to understand. That being said the Hunger Games movie was much worse and I nearly fell asleep. Anyway when I was at the Japanese bookstore last week I saw the Hunger Games translated in Japanese but it just had the standard cover, nothing like what the OP originally linked.

Edit: And I don't mean to say that BR book is bad too, seeing as I haven't read it.

While the premise of the two books is very similar, the books are actually pretty different.
BR is more pulpy and ultra violent, and tries to give a little bit of back story to each character. While the government in the story is indeed horrible, the kids at least are well fed and, provided they do what they're told, can live out a somewhat normal life.
The Hunger Games is nowhere near as violent as BR, and focuses a lot more on Katniss' survival, in game, and out. The people living in the Districts are essentially slaves to those in the Capital, providing them a life of luxury while they face the threat of dying from starvation. The reasons for holding the Games also makes a lot more sense than it did in BR.

Anyone who says that Hunger Games is just like Battle Royale (I was one of hose people!) should read the book first. If you start comparing them, you realize that they're pretty different, and they're both good for different reasons.

Oh, BTW, does anyone know where to buy a copy of Battle Royale in Japanese that's not Amazon?

This looks like the right version
http://honto.jp/netstore/pd-book_01676106.html

If your beef with Amazon is their shipping prices then honto should be better. They charge shipping per weight and not per package, and you get different shipping options from express to sea mail, balancing how long time it takes with its cost. But aren't there BookOff or kinokuniya in Canada?

Thanks for the link! Amazon's shipping is so crazy that I have to stockpile and order at least $100 of books to make it worth my while. I'll have to dig through this site to see what else they have.
We don't have a Kinokuniya in Canada, and I completely forgot to look for BR when I was at the Kinokuniya in San Jose. There was a Iwase Books in Richmond, and a BookOff in Vancouver, but they're both gone now. Online ordering is my only option now, so it's good to have a selection of stores to order from.

Yeah, my first order of Japanese books was from the jp Amazon and with the shipping I had to pay it was a crazy waste of money. It was a while since I last ordered from Honto though, maybe things could have changed a bit? The company merged together with an old site called bk1.jp that was great, and it seems like they inherited all its shipping policies.

I can confirm that that's the correct version. Same one as I saw in the store anyway. Such a huge book.
