huh? ok... no probs Smile i'll retype with a normal link...? (is there really so much difference?? ah well, nm...)

Yabla is great!!! It's pretty much my ultimate learning tool!!!!! Unfortunately, there's no Japanese yet, but they seem to be expanding, so hopefully sometime in the future... they have Chinese (Mandarin), French, Spanish, German, Italian, and English so far.

It's pretty much how i learned Japanese, but with much less effort involved. It's lots of short videos on different subjects, with transcriptions in the language, with english transcriptions too (both of which are hidable). You can click on any word to bring up the dictionary on the right hand side. You can loop the audio for one line, or slow it down. You can easily move between various lines, and repeat them. You can play a game where you fill in the missing word from listening to what you hear. It even has flashcards to review words you've learned while watching the videos!!!

It's basically awesome. You can check out a demo on their site if you're interested... even though it's a subscription site, it's the 1st one i've seen that i really think is worth paying for!!

It looks interesting, but it's so very spammy, Ice Cream. Sad I'd feel it was a lot less spammy without the referral links.

And no Japanese? What!?

Yabla - My Ultimate Language Learning Site! - Kuma01 - 2012-02-28

Seems like it might have had some uses for japanese, but unfortunately it only has chinese. I tested the german one, it has been quite a while since my last high school lesson but I was still able to understand everything on level 3/5, which makes me question whether or not it's any good if you're intermediate or above.

Yabla - My Ultimate Language Learning Site! - IceCream - 2012-02-28

if you click on >Videos, >Most difficult, then under each video there's a "vocab" button, which shows you all the less common vocab in the video.

It also tells you the speech rate, so you can work on understanding faster speakers or whatever.

So maybe that would help you assess?? But yeah, i think if you're already above intermediate in any language you're probably better off just consuming lots of full length TV shows and books to pick up the language, something like this really isn't so necessary...

This site looks great. I really wish they had Japanese though... Thanks for posting anyway, hopefully I'll remember it if I ever start a third language (which seems pretty likely, just not any time soon). I see nothing wrong with using referral links if it's something worth posting about anyway.

Hmm, this really makes me want tot re-start the Italian I gave up on to focus on Japanese. I'm not sure whether I should be trying to resist the temptation or making the most of feeling motivated. Damn you for this.

They implemented my idea for language learning!!! Smile

Short video clip with native source, transcribed, with parallel translation. And you can look up individual words with one click. Shame there is no Japanese version there, but...

I threw "yabla japanese" at google and was directed back to koohii forum Smile

And this is yudantaiteki's take on this, in a different thread:

(I cite him bc he expresses my doubts/questions about “Erin’s Challenge! I Can Speak Japanese.”)

We can always ask them to add Japanese in the future: inquire@yabla.com

I'm sure if enough people ask they will take notice. It will still take a while for it to get added, but any serious learners are in it for the long haul anyway Smile

weird, when you search for it on the forum, it only comes up with mine...

Erin ga Chosen is decent, but i just found it a little boring. It's the same with most courses like that, i think, cos there's so little variation. I think most people prefer to jump around a lot of different stuff to learn rather than stick to one story.

I also really like the fact that they have interviews with people on Yabla. I've used drama A LOT in Japanese, just because that's what you can get subs for, but it would have been really nice to have more natural speech stuff with full transcripts. There's a couple of shows (which i didn't get that into), then there's that book Living Japanese, with transcripts, and http://www.laits.utexas.edu/orkelm/japan/index.html that, but these very "educational" kind of things can often be a bit dry too, so i think Yabla has it pretty much perfect...

No? Yes?

If you want to post affiliate links, then make yourself a blog. Work and earn your traffic.

Whether you like them or found them useful is irrelevant.

How about we have everyone start posting affiliate links?

If you're allowed to, then everyone is. So, NO.

That's not ok either. But I can't be expected to verify and follow each and every link.

I have other preoccupations right now.

I think it looks awesome and love the idea of online, AUTHENTIC videos for immersion. I liked the idea of slowing down the video - I used to do that with my dictaphone etc.

I have been in this language learning game for ten years and am always skeptical about new ideas but this really does look excellent - Chinese looks good so they should defo add Japanese and Arabic... Thanks for posting

This is awesome. I emailed them asking about Japanese and got a reply less than 20min. later:

"We aren't working on a Japanese program at the moment, but we will certainly keep you in the loop if we work on one in the future."

So doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. Too bad.

Tried out the chinese section and like it a lot. The vocabulary drill mode is very nice.

Would like to use some of these videos for shadowing practice too.

yea, hope they will come out with a jp product.
