Kanji Stories [iPhone, iPad app for RevTK] - phido - 2012-02-22

I have developed an iPhone/iPad app called 'Kanji Stories' which allows you to import your stories from this website (using CSV files), search the kanji, view stroke orders and edit the stories. And it is free.
iTunes

Comments and suggestions are welcome!

* Update March 23, 2014
Kanji Stories version 2.0 is now available in the App Store. There are lots of new features Smile

Gestures
- Previous/next kanji: swipe left/right.
- Go to previous view: swipe from left edge (iOS 7 only), or tap/swipe with two fingers.

Stories from Reviewing the Kanji
- A file is included with more than 6,000 stories from Reviewing the Kanji.
- There is a link to each kanji study page so that you can easily find more stories.

Define your own primitives
- Define multiple primitives by separating them with ";" in the edit screen.
- The app will automatically link the primitive to the kanji where the primitive was first defined.
- Instead of primitives you can also define the kanji components (for example "日;月" for 明).

Select the list of kanji
- The app now includes the kanji of the latest editions of both Volume 1 and Volume 3 of Remembering the Kanji.
- You also show only hiragana and katakana.

Files
- It is not longer necessary to use a PC to add and edit new files.
- Create a new file within the app.
- Send a file by e-mail.
- Add and remove kanji from a file (in the edit screen).

iPad
- Optimal use of the screen space with the split view.

You sir (madam?), are a scholar and a gentleman.

Any support for a reviewing schedule such as that which is used by Koohii?

Kanji Stories [iPhone, iPad app for RevTK] - ファブリス - 2012-02-23

That is pretty cool. So it seems like a RevTK member can use this app as a portable reference of their stories.

Sounds good to me. I'll purchase that app today!

Hmm, when I try to import or use imported csv files it crashes. I am only able to use the file that comes with the app.

The purpose of the app is to look up the stories. For reviewing I think the Anki app would be much better choice than trying to make an SRS myself.

Can you send me the CSV file? I sent you a private message.

Done.

For now if the app crashes when reading a CSV file then you can try to put all text entries in quotes " ". The easiest way to do this is to open the CSV file in OpenOffice and then save it to a new file. OpenOffice will add the quotation marks automatically for all text entries.

I have (hopefully) fixed the issue. A new version has been submitted to Apple for review.

An update has been released in the App store. I have added support for stroke orders for iOS 4.3 and fixed the above mentioned crashing of the app when importing some CSV files.

how is this different from the rtk main app? (where you can import the stories from this site)

regards

I tried it with a file containing stories for the first 1900 Kanji on this site. After #1550 the stories are blank in the app. In addition, some of the stories are not the ones in set in the current file (like #1550 for example). Maybe its coming from a previous version of the file? If I first open the file in open office, save it, and then send the saved file to the app, then everything works fine. Let me know if there is some way I can get the file to you.

I don't have the official RTK app but I think the main differences are:
1. The official app has flash cards for reviewing & drawing practice while my app is mainly a tool for looking up
2. The official app costs 9.99 USD while my app is FREE Smile

Personally I use Anki for learning and reviewing kanji. But if I read some Japanese text on my iPhone and I don't know the kanji or the stroke order then I use my app to look it up. I just paste the whole Japanese sentence into my app and then I can easily find the stories for all the kanji in the sentence.

A CSV with the top 2 stories from this site can be found in this thread http://forum.koohii.com/showthread.php?tid=7522&page=3. See reply #64.

I sent you the file with the issue. I also have some ideas for possible enhancements:

1. Ability to make the font for the Kanji bigger. This would be especially useful on the iPad where the Kanji is relatively small compared to the space available. It would make it easier to read.

2. A search mechanism for faster lookup. It ould use the ability to search by keyword and by Heisig number.

3. Ablity to search by 6th edition volume Heisig order.

I like the app overall. I also own the official RTK app and it seems to only cover RTK 1 while yours has all the Kanji from RTK 1 and RTK 3.

Thanks for the suggestions!

PotbellyPig Wrote:I sent you the file with the issue.
Thanks for the file. I have checked the CSV but it seems to work OK for me. All stories up to 1900 show up in the app. I am using Kanji Stories v1.1 with iPhone 4 & iPad 1 on iOS 5.

Do you mean the kanji in the list screen, the story screen or the stroke order screen?

PotbellyPig Wrote:2. A search mechanism for faster lookup. It ould use the ability to search by keyword and by Heisig number.
In the search bar at the top you can already search by Heisig number, keyword or kanji. So I am not sure what you mean...

PotbellyPig Wrote:3. Ablity to search by 6th edition volume Heisig order.
I will put this on the to-do list. I just need to find a list with all the changes for the 6th edition.

I just sent you an e-mail describing the steps needed to reproduce.

On the story screen. It's a bit too small for my tastes..

Didn't see the search icon there! Thanks!

Two more possible enhancement:

1. The supplemental Kanji (3008-3030) are not in the program. These are the ones that were added for the 2010 Joyo update. See http://kanji.koohii.com/news/id/154 for more info.

2. It would be nice to have a filter option so you can only see Kanji on the search/browse screen that have stories populated. If a Kanji has a blank story, then leave it out of the list. That way you can see all the stories you have. This is useful if you are doing the 6th edition RTK 1 since the extra kanji are scattered in the 2043-3030 range. This would enable you to see all your stories at once.

Those are good suggestions. I am a bit busy at the moment but I will try to implement some of your suggestions this week.

I have installed your app and it seems great, but I was wondering if you could provide an option for those who would rather fork over a few bucks to avoid the ads.

Thanks!

I will try to implement it after I have finished some of the suggestions by PotbellyPig.

Kanji Stories [iPhone, iPad app for RevTK] - Drunkendo - 2012-03-13

I tried to download it, but it says that's it not compatible with my iPhone.
I have an old iPhone 3G I keep because of the Kanji/Japanese learning apps.
Is there any chance to make the app compatible for the iPhone 3G.

Thanks Wink

The app stopped importing my sentences after about 850. Not much use now.

I'd pay a buck or two if it would work properly and to get rid of the ads.

(The ads can be lessened by putting your iPhone in "Airplane" mode. They are still ultra annoying.)

Delete the story file in the program (hit the edit button) and then load the file again. Or just load one with a different filename. Wait a good 10 seconds or so before you select any characters while it is loading. It seems that that touching a character can interrupt the processing and cause stories to be blank until the end of the file. It has happened to me in the past. I submitted the potential bug to the author.

As PotbellyPig mentioned, you can delete a CSV file by going to 'Settings' and click on 'Edit'.

If you download a CSV to you computer first and then load it with iTunes/Dropbox/E-mail then the file should always load correctly. If it still doesn't work, please send me a personal message.

I have submitted a new version to Apple last week that shows an alert while loading.
