What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-14 I noticed a huge shared anki deck that I think was made by people here, core plus or something like that. Have any of you used that? Seems like it could be efficient, unsuspending stuff from that deck as opposed to having to make new cards/decks. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-14 Hmm, has anyone gotten the audio to work with that huge deck? I tried downloading some but there are always problems when I try to extract it. It says 'the archive file is incomplete.' Any suggestions? What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - jhen095 - 2012-02-14 I've just gotten audio working for corePlus. There are two fields in the cards called something like 'remote sound' and 'remote sentence sound' which I added to the cards template. These are weblinks to mp3's which seem to work fine. Once they are in the card layout they play automatically when the question or answer is displayed. Not sure how many of the cards have remote links, but so far so good. Then I think Anki has a feature to automatically download the remote files for all cards if they have the field in the card layout, but I haven't tried this yet. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - vix86 - 2012-02-14 corePlus is just the core6K deck + 4k more cards pulled from the common list that EDICT uses to determine "common frequency." Its not a bad deck if you don't want to bother with the work of making your own deck. I still think after the core6k you really should be focusing on your own readings and deck building. The corePlus deck has a few problems as well that I don't think the original creator ever fixed and reuploaded to the shared deck database, but I could be wrong. In particular you can't review the deck on AnkiDroid due to some versioning issues with the deck. I found ways to fix it though. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-14 The coreplus deck I'm looking at is over 20,000 facts. Is that the one you're talking about? Thanks for the audio info. So should I be able to hear sound without downloading any mp3s? Just want to make sure I understood that. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - jhen095 - 2012-02-14 Correct for both questions. Of course you will need to be connected to the internet to stream the audio from the remote source. To manually check the audio. Open up the fact Ctrl+E and scroll down to see 'remote sound' field, for example, one of mine is [sound:http://assets1.smart.fm/assets/legacy/JLL/audio/JW01720A.mp3] then copy and paste web address part (http://assets1.smart.fm/assets/legacy/JLL/audio/JW01720A.mp3) into the browser URL, you should be able to play it from the browser to test it is working. Then to the card layout I added {{remote sound}} to the question and {{remote sentence sound}} to the answer so they will play automatically. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? For some reason I had thought it was 10k... But I think that makes it even worse. 20k word is basically like grabbing the dictionary and deciding you'll just add almost every word to your deck (Which is what the desc. say: "As well as the core words and sentences, there is additional vocabulary (~ 20,000 in total) taken from the the words listed as common by Jim Breen's Edict. ") The core6k defiantly have audio for the word and the sentence. I also think there is an unofficial core10k floating around too (I know I heard about a core10k somewhere). Not all of the cards in the corePlus deck have example sentences and they definitely don't have audio. Just something to keep in mind. If you haven't completed the core2k yet then I don't think you quite grasp just how many words the core6k will bring you to after finishing it. People will downplay it saying you still can't read fluidly, but its still a hefty chunk when most people consider 10-15k words a pretty solid number for ample understanding of most material (magazines/newspapers/news). What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-14 Thanks for the additional info! I'll try that audio method. I hear you; trying to learn a 20,000+ deck is a bit crazy. I was thinking of just starting with it all suspended and unsuspending words as I came across them in reading and conversation. I just don't want to have to make big decks myself. Maybe that sounds lazy, but it just seems too time-consuming. And yeah, maybe 6,000 will get me further than I think. I hope so. I'm a decent way into the 6k part at the moment. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - kainzero - 2012-02-14 remember that vocab decks are only supplements... you need a lot of reading to really understand. with vocab decks you're able to read sentences but when you read you have to string together ideas to understand the point of what you're reading, as well as get used to seeing words in different contexts. i make my own decks because i think putting it in is part of studying. Part of the benefit of Core6k is it has sentences showing the word in context. You could study single worded if you wanted, but I'm pretty sold on sentence decks now after running into so many homonyms. That said, I do find that seeing stuff in context, out in the real world, makes words stick better that I learned. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? After a quick glance at the JLPT1 tagged questions, it seemed like a lot of the non-core ones didn't have anything there, though they did have mp3 file names in the (non-remote) sound field. So... I guess I should try to download the mp3s. But I like I mentioned, I couldn't extract them for some reason. Any suggestions? What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-15 Yeah, kainzero, I think that's definitely good to remember. Thanks for the reminder. Luckily, I'm not just doing decks, as much as it may look like from this thread. I speak in Japanese every day, often long conversations, and I'm doing more and more reading as I go. I do think that a sentence deck does a lot more than a word deck. And I agree with vix86; seeing stuff I just studied in new contexts in the real world makes it stick. I think the combination is good. I cram as much as I can into my head with SRS, and then hope as much as possible stays in, which is increased if I'm reading/speaking a lot. So, about that deck's sound? Any suggestions? (see my last post above) What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - jhen095 - 2012-02-15 I'm not up to N1 vocab yet so can't comment on that audio. So far the remote field seems to be working for me with N5+Core2000 tags, although I've only been going for a few days. As far as I can tell from searching Goog, you should be able to download audio for all core6000. But I wouldn't have a clue how to hook the audio files up to the cards, except for doing it one-by-one. And not sure of N1 -> core6000 overlap. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - prettyfunbird - 2012-02-15 I actually have all the audio working in a normal core 6000 deck. I was just looking at that coreplus deck as something beyond the 6000, and hoping I could get audio working with it. If anyone's gotten that working, let me know! Games like that can be really good practice because they're fully voiced, so you get to hear people say the lines as well and you don't always have to look up the kanji. Plus with many (though not all) of the games, you can stop on each speech bubble as long as you want to look things up. Certain games (unfortunately not many) even let you go back through the conversation and see the lines, and even replay the voice clips for whichever lines you want.yudantaiteki Wrote:RPG video games actually have a large amount of text with no furigana and sometimes pretty technical writing.star ocean 3 anyone? The 軌跡 series also has huge amounts of text and some pretty tough words and kanji -- unfortunately, the font they use for the PSP versions is hard to read if you don't already know generally what the kanji are supposed to look like...or maybe I'm exaggerating. The audio is what helps out the most, you get to shadow/repeat when necessary. The vocabulary at times is definitely advanced but that's what makes it fun, well at least for me.... The games weren't bad in essence but whenever you try to compare something to what it's original is, it will never live up to it's quality (most cases). The game itself(from what I remember and what I've seen from watching it in japanese is). The story is abstract and is hard to follow at times. Then again, in general it was fun to play but the game I enjoyed a lot was star ocean 3. The story for that game was good but after a while, it just turned upside down (if you played it, you will know what I mean). Other than that, it's a fun/long game to play. I wouldn't recommend trying to max them out or anything, that would take forever....ta12121 Wrote:I really wanted to like Xenosaga, since I liked Xenogears so much, but when I tried to play Xenosaga in English when it first came out I just wanted to shoot myself in the face. But does anyone know of a working download for the 20,000+ coreplus deck? I'm fine downloading a ridiculous number of mp3s if I can extract them. Hmm maybe I should ask this in the learning resources section. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? Like, Final Fantasy VII was great, but Dirge of Cerberus is way below the line of quality of a game you would want to play. Xenosaga is bad enough compared to a lot of other RPGs that were coming out for the PS2 that even as a Xenogears fanboy I couldn't bring myself to play through it. I liked Star Ocean 3 when I played it, but I only played the first 15 hours or so. I think I got it along with 3 or 4 other games at the end of high school, and when I went to college my gaming time went way down and I never got around to finishing it. I'll finish it one day if I ever have time. Really, for the next eight years I don't see myself having time to play more than one RPG a year, if I go back to school as planned. So there's stiff competition for my RPG time--as things are now I've played through just one RPG in the last three years. I used to play through maybe five a year. What more do I need to get to JLPT 1級? (grammar/vocab) - kainzero - 2012-02-16 i don't understand xenosaga in english so good luck understanding it in japanese. =) i used to play every RPG when it came out back in the SNES/PSX days, beating them within a week, now i can barely finish one over the course of a year. even though the vocab is complicated that doesn't mean it's better to learn. some of this stuff doesn't make sense in english either. i don't even know what "time compression" from FF8 is, i don't think i want to know what it is in Japanese nor do i think it will be very helpful =) |
