Seriously, I tried ginko for a few months, with no effect. I also tried DHA, which is derived from fish oil. I think it helped me, but I really can't remember. DHA's gotten a lot of press, such as this short piece claiming it can boost memory by 15 percent.

I mean, if you never forgot any of the Japanese you heard or read, it would be a pretty easy language to learn.

Whether they increase concentration is probably arguable, but they were often used for stuff like studying for an exam back in the days... I know my grandparents and most of their classmates used them up to an exam so they could study for 2-3 days without sleeping or going tired. That said, I have no doubt that one is better of without methamphetamine in the long run.

Talking about "drugs", can anyone recommend me some kind of website or journal I might read in Japanese that is like Lifehacker.jp (just without all these Android-stuff news/related articles) or National Geographic in Japanese? I really like nature/lifestyle related articles. Cooking and so on is just a big interest of mine and perhaps you guys know such a magazine/journal that I can read online. I feel much safer now with 9000 words under my belt and now I need a DRUG!!!! :D

I think essential fatty acids in general will lead to some improvement (over time), since most Westerners have a massive deficiency from eating nothing but refined oils, margarine, fried foods etc. I wouldn't be surprised if rather than DHA boosting memory, intake of crappy fats weakens it, and DHA supplementation is a way of correcting, or at least stifling, the problem.

If you have crappy biochemistry due to poor diet, stress, lifestyle, environmental factors and so on, then few things are likely to improve your health before you make changes. That's part of the problem when saying 'supplement X does/doesn't work,' especially since a lot of supplements contain all sorts of junk ingredients, or are outright useless like rancid fish oil capsules.

I guess if you wanted one "drug" to help your studies, it'd be good health, but it's hard to find nowadays, and requires some serious commitment and expenditure. I think I'd end up opting for the どら焼き.

You need more "immersion" =drug. There was a site that listed stuff per subject, just forgot what it is. I bet you could find what your looking for on new sites.
