Remembering the kanji but not the story - heyo1 - 2012-07-02
So, I understand that it is expected that eventually you will remember the kanji without needing to think of the story, but how soon should this happen? Right now, I'm at frame 630, and there are some kanji that, whether from RTK or previous study, I just know when I see the keyword. Is this too early for the stories to be disappearing? Most of the time when reviewing, I'll try to recall the story for each kanji, just to make sure that remembering it isn't a fluke.
What do you guys think on the matter?

Don't ever worry about your stories disappearing. They're supposed to. It's just mental scaffolding. As you go along your stories will start to be a lot less concrete, and you'll need to rely on them less.

This should happen very soon. It's not a matter of which frame number you're at, it's a matter of how many times you've reviewed/how long you've known a kanji. Some kanji stick better than others.

You didn't mention if you are using a SRS, and how long since you last review such characters. You may be experiencing short term memory of the characters, which is no good.
It's best to recall the story, to reinforce the primitives, especially when you're not even halfway through the book. If I remember well Heisig also states this point. Always recall the story, no matter what, at least until you have completed RTK.
Point being if you look at a character and you can't name the primitives, you don't know it, and the RTK method is not bearing its fruits.

I personally wouldn't worry about it too much, halfway through RtK I picked up some Japanese readings by accident almost, and they stuck instantly, completely replacing the story almost. I think remembering the primitives is more important than the story..
