@enf2k5
How long have you been using that book And How is shadowing going for you?

I've only been using it for a couple of Weeks now, so i can't really tell you how effective it will be in the end. But for a beginner like me it's much easier to shadow than a random Podcast or Drama.

I tried that book... the main problem i had with it was that the stuff you were supposed to shadow was quite short. Which makes it hard to speak over the top of them because it's easy to miss the start.

I used the first and the 2nd shadowing book...

Would definitely recommend it. For some reason I never get bored of it and been listening to it off and on for about 9 months. I can recite a lot of it fairly fluidly now.

I've noticed in conversation if any of these things come up I can instantly reply with a fluid response.

I only wish there were about hundred more books like these -> Good conversational dialog with scripts.

I especially like the 2nd book... A wedding speech, baseball game talk, office talk, presentations, etc.. At first it may be a little challenging but after listening to it for 1000 times and reading etc, it's almost 2nd nature.

The 2nd book is kinda of intermediate to advanced so starting with the first book would be better. Even the first one has some challenging parts.

yea, it's what I listen to on my commute every day.
Although, I also mix it up with other stuff from time to time just to keep it fresh.

After my first trip to Japan I decided I need to stop reading/writing so much and get into more speaking, since that is so much more useful when actually there.

Resultantly I'm now on the first book shadowing, blazing through it at lightning speed since it's easy stuff. Will need to order the second book soon.

I use anki to make sure I remember what all the translations are and learn any Kanji that I don't already know and then I can listen to the audio and understand it all, then it's just practice speaking it out aloud.

I know other people have asked this before somewhere, but are there any recommended materials to move onto after the second book? At this point you have reached the "advanced" shadowing stage, yet I suspect it is nowhere near advanced enough to comprehend actual native Japanese content.

I have all the Japanesepod101 stuff downloaded, frankly the beginner lessons bore me to death and the long intros plus "sponsored by blah blah" annoys me. The actual content of the lessons is quite nice but still not really my cup of tea.

I love the shadowing because it is just Japanese non-stop and no teacher explaining it in English, you basically do the explaining to yourself beforehand and then listen to the Japanese on its own with no explanations, which is awesome. If there is more stuff like this I would love it.

As a side note, SRSing the white rabbit press shadowing book has a great side effect of preparing you for manga since the whole thing is short dialogue which is exactly the same as manga. It serves as a great stepping stone if you are not at the level to dive into beginner manga yet Smile

I have that shadowing book too, the one from White Rabbit and I agree, sometimes it does go a bit fast... But then I just pick either the voice of A or B to shadow.

The only thing I have trouble with is the girl's voice, to me it sounds a bit over the top at times and I fear that if I start speaking like her everyone will look at me like I'm crazy :/

I just bought both those shadowing books and the first two levels of the graded readers from White Rabbit. I'll report back with a review on both when I receive them.

Sounds expensive! (the biggest downside to rabbit press)

For people shadowing, how well have you noticed an increase in your listening (and even speaking) comprehension? I'm having so much trouble with listening that it's driving me insane. I get incredibly mad at myself for it but haven't tried shadowing yet.

Also if I just go to a Japanese book store and find a book and its accompanying audio tape do you think I could shadow off of an authentic source? I know there's a thread with sources of text and its audio but none of those texts appeal to me.

I think you can shadow absolutely anything.
