My phone isn't rooted, so that's not really an option (Nor am I comfortable in doing so for multiple reasons, not the least of which being that I've only owned a smartphone for less than a month.)

It works without being rooted. I think I needed to click a checkbox to allow non-play store apps, but it worked fine on my non-rooted phone.

Ah, thanks for the confirmation. The checkbox is System - > Security -> Unknown sources

This doesn't matter. Even free apps can be restricted outside of their markets. As an example I need a US VPN in order to get Angry Birds (the free version) from the Google play store. There are a lot of restricted free apps.

I was afraid to install something with a scary sounding name, so I just used a VPN and that worked!

Figures that N2 TTS seems a little wonky in it's pronunciation (Using the particle pronunciation of "は" at the beginning of a word? Really?)

I just found by chance this video player for Android which lets you play videos with Japanese (and Chinese) softsubs.
And the overall quality is pretty decent, too (the subs aren't microscopic).

It's called Xfplay.

MX Player works fine for that. Lots of subtitle options like scaling too.

By the way, I am searching for a way to play Japanese dubbed movies on my Galaxy tablet.
Buying the BD and ripping it would be a good idea but shipping costs way too much so I thought that I might go on the Amazon.jp store and simply buy the digital version of the movie (for 2000￥).
Do you guys think it's a good idea?
