Windows 7, typing Japanese and viewing? - stplush - 2011-12-15
I've used OSX Tiger for the longest time and my iMac is starting to go out finally. So, I'm thinking of getting a laptop, but don't want to shell out 1000+ for Mac this time unless necessary.
Just wondering if typing and viewing Japanese content is as good on Windows 7. I've heard that instead of the Japanese being readily available you have to install some pack. Please explain if there are any other drawbacks.

Mine could pretty much display any script minus lime kmher script right out of the box. You would have to enable an IME(Windows IME that comes with it) for Japanese though...
BTW I had Windows 7 Home Premium...

I have both a Mac and Win7 box at home - Had to get Win7 ultimate to be able to Type in Japanese - ~$200. Both use keyboard shortcuts to switch back and forth between languages. Windows also is application specific. For instance, If you're trying to type 日本語 in a web browser, you need for it to have focus before enabling the Japanese language option in the IME. I definitely prefer using the Mac way, but it's doable in Windows.

huh? i have win7 professional and i can obviously type in japanese.
the ime comes with windows and you can enable it in a menu.
or you can download the google IME.
if you want to run japanese programs you have to use AppLocale or change your unicode settings to Japanese, though this might cause your other programs to change language too. that's how i learned how to use utorrent in japanese.

A quick google search of "how to type in japanese windows 7" returns a bunch of tutorials on what you have to download and how to set everything up. It's not a very difficult process.

To echo the others, you only need ultimate if you want to change the display language of the menus etc. to Japanese. Home versions can type and display Japanese text just fine. Just enable it via the Language Bar.

Open mouth put foot inside. I was using Vista prior to Win 7. I possibly read too much into the requirements for running multiple languages at the time, Oh well.
Regardless, I still prefer the Mac IME, as I hate keeping track of focus being application specific. Anyone know work arounds for that?
