What is the best background music for studying - Raschaverak - 2011-11-19

In your opinion? Now I mean studying from books, old fashion style, like reading, comprehending, then memorizing, not mainly SRS. I gues sounds of nature (rainforest, ect.) animals (dolphins, ect.), classical music, your favorite music, and those alpha wave activating sounds come in mind first hand. Now, besides these, I'm looking for something creative. Any ideas? Music that helps me concentrate, to shut out the entire environment. Ok, maybe someone could link some of those alpha wave activating sounds, the last time I've checked, they were not for free...

something like this
?
I just searched alpha binaural beat on youtube.

I prefer listening to music that I like, although it sometimes distracts me. Maybe some music that drowns out background noise, so you can concentrate, but doesn't distract you very much. I guess it would be different for each person.

I can't listen to anything with any lyrics, Japanese or otherwise, while studying. So, I listen to a lot of no-lyrics electronica, particularly ambient.

The best music for studying is no music.

Just quiet.

I prefer silence... but when I was in college I was forced to use some kind of music to block out loud voices that were even more distracting. I used post-rock for the most part.

Here's Godspeed You Black Emperor

The other two I would recommend for someone new to post-rock would be Sigur Ros and Mogwai. (Here's a Sigur Ros song:
)

If you like what you hear with those three, check out Giant Squid, Isis, Kayo Dot, Mono, and Do Make Say Think.

My favorite of all of them is Cerberus Shoal, who was only post-rock for their earlier albums, but they're one of my five favorite bands. Unfortunately, not easy to find--you'd probably have to buy their CDs. A good starter one is "The Land We All Believe In", which I'll recommend even though it's not one of their post-rock albums.

If you want seasonal, I can personally study to Christmas music. In particular, the soundtrack to "A Charlie Brown Christmas". So calming and timeless.

If you want ambient, Piana is a good choice. Thanks to that one thread that brought Piana up.

HY is rather low-key and I feel their music is not intrusive to the thought required for studying.

Yea I know it's music from a game but this motivates me a lot for some reason. I'd recommend Jazz music for people who are into that stuff(they seriously have some nice tunes there) and lounge music. A also like to listen to video game tracks(if they catch my ear haha).

I made a channel on Pandora using The Future Sound of London as the basis. It never plays a bad song or advertisement.

I know lots of people would argue about this but what works the best for me is Hiphop. Proven long ago and I still feel like that.

Why?
I never lose my focus on studying, I get a decent rush of motivation and the beat is just perfect for studying, not too slow nor too fast. Just perfect.

When I listen to trance I get rushes of good feeling from music but that's distracting me from studying in a pleasant way, so it's not a friend of studying.

I am listening to different genres, depending on the things I do, while listening. When I was still coding, Dropkick Murphys, Psychadelic-Goa, Goa in general, Metal, and such that kept me going. For more creative things I have Classical music running. Ennio Morricone, Tom Waits, Broadcast, De Phazz, Lisa Germano, King Crimson, Mike Oldfield, Everlast, Anime Music, Radio Veronica, Live 365 Fm, or other stations from NL among others while learning. Lately its music and stations from Japan that I am listening to while learning, in case I don't want to have something else running, Drama, Anime and such. So no real preference here, but it greatly depends on my general mood what I am listening to, while learning something - anything.

I adore Goa too Wink
But too intense for studying usually.

Chillwave is also good for chillax studying sometimes, just the name already got me into it Big Grin Sounds exactly like the name of the genre feels.

Toro Y Moi "Still Sound"

There isn't any right music for studying, the key is knowing a wide variety of music and then playing it according to your feeling at that moment.

We have a studying room at my dormitory and it works really damn well.
all you have to do is go there with your learning materials ( the smaller the amount the better it is, nothing in excess) and your ipod. And then I can basically listen to any kind of music without feeling that I need something more to keep me concentrated.

So I think that if you have an empty room, without any stuff in it and you can make it into a studying room, or have a library very close by, you should definitely consider that option.

Music is there for keeping me motivated, fast and concentrated.

The right environment is there for having no excess thoughts and for concentrating on the moment ( in this case, the moment is studying).

The way I would put it is: Music is 15%, the environment is 60% of importance.

cool, i really love their 'an egypt that does not exist'(off of 'mr.boy dog')

i usually prefer silence, but when i put some music on, it's often minimalism in the vein of lamonte young or charlemagne palestine. especially 'the second dream of the high-tension line stepdown transformer '.

stars of the lid are great, too.

Best background music for me is Psy (mostly PsyChill). It activates my brainwaves, has the groove to keep me going and doesn't distract too much. It's funky enough to keep being interesting and gives the mind something to go on.

What I do is light up some incense and study kanji or programming in full focus while listening to Psychill. I do Taichi when I take breaks.

Here is a playlist I whipped up:

I have two Infected Mushroom playlists. One of them has songs with vocals. The other doesn't. I use the one without for studying. Stuff like http://youtu.be/JnhFsHyeeNQ

But I'm about to give that binaural beats track listed in second post a shot. Sounds interesting.

I have always liked classical music for studying, or movie soundtracks. Anything with lyrics distracts me. It has to be calm, though - as much as I like them, pieces like the 1812 Overture or the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is no good for me if I want to focus on reading or studying. I like Chris Rice's "Living Room Sessions" or the soundtrack to "The Piano" or "The Pianist" (similar titles, very different movies).

Everyone's brain works differently, though. When my husband studies, he plays music from groups like the Offspring, My Chemical Romance, Eminem, and Limp Bizkit. Opposites attract?

Or sounds of nature.

NATURESPACE has an app for iPad with samples that loop indefinitely.

I don't know what they are doing with the sound but it has similarities with "brainwave" sounds.

Check your speakers then clicky click:

Nice. Anyone who's even heard of them gets some props from me! An Egypt That Does Not Exist is a great track--though, unfortunately, that album shows how hit or miss that band can be. A lot of those tracks aren't really worth listening to, but a few are gems. I still love them in spite of that, since when they hit they hit big.

If you ever have a few bucks to blow buy the album "The Vim and Vigour of Alvarious B and Cerberus Shoal." There's a track called "Ding" which is probably the best thing they ever did.

I think The Land We All Believe In is their most solid album--the only bad track is "Pie For the President." "Wyrm" is probably the best on the album.

Anybody know if there is an official video to this song?

I like it, but all the vids on youtube are fan made or of live performance.
