Hi,
My name is クリス , I am a French student living somewhere in France and I have been studying japanese like most of people here with books and by travelling in Japan.
It has been 2 years since I first started but I still suck at it.
I am currently supposed to attend the Jlpt 2 exam next week, but I know I 'm about to fail.
By far I know about 1300 kanji or more, i tried RTK method but can't get a good feeling with it past 500 first kanji.
What I aim by creating this topic is actually to look for people with bad level such as me but with a strong interest in becoming fluent no matters what it takes !
As many of you, I got a dream inside me, It's pretty frustrating sometimes, I know it requires quite a lot of patience but I know it's worthing it.
So here it comes, Basically it's just a shitty idea i guess but I know it can be helpy.
The idea is to gather People who are eager to work together and to keep track of our improvement to each another. The result will be Motivation ! (It's not like a race but rather more a way to keep ourselves in line when we feel tired or so)
So here's what i though :
-Making a writing japanese transcription of japanese youtube video (interviews, debate, news) put it here in the topic (video + transcription) Everyday
-Analyse and sum up articles from nikkei website http://www.nikkei.com/ Everyday

I wouldn't mind doing transcription and I have done a few videos before but one thing that annoys me is the copyright issue with using Youtube. So making such an account would be problematic. Let's say you put up shows that are unlicensed, once they do become licensed, the copyright will become enforced. There is a site where people have put up Japanese subtitles but it's only in text format and the video isn't provided.
As for learning Japanese, I know where your coming from. I'm 2 years in to Japanese and I feel I'm only half way to my goal. Although if it took 2 years to get half way, I expect it will take me another 2-3 years to reach the other half(maybe even less, depending on what I do). What makes Japanese harder than most languages is: the text. Mastering that will take a long while(fluency is what I'm talking about it).
You just need to keep the motivation up and learn a little everyday. Some people love to do go hardcore(I've done it a lot) but I've learned that going at a certain pace is more better than going at a larger pace. You can handle more in a day and you won't burnout.

Thank you for posting, yes license seems to be quite an issue, i might consider a way to bypass it...
It's nice to feel that we aren't alone, somewhere in earth other people feel the same.
I tried to do hardcore and cram some things but it's harsh... and made me crazy ...

I know all about going hardcore with learning Japanese. I used to so so much SRS reps (I use a spaced repetition software called Anki). It's a way of memorizing/understanding items for the long-term. I've used it in all forms(large amount of new cards a day, so much reviews the next day). I've learned that going a slow pace is key and not to overwork yourself. What I look at for motivation is, if one person can do it, then anyone else can do it. Sure the person may be more dedicated than others or a quick learner as well but that doesn't mean the other person cannot learn it as well as the next. It's all relative, if one can do it, then you can do it. Languages are one of those things that anyone can do, if done right.

Actually I also tried hardcore and that saved me but i can't do it now too busy with other things ...
I agree with your way of thinking "if someone can do it then i can also do it".
I think i was just impatient sometimes, I remember when i was making research about synesthesia (with rare case such as kim peek, daniel tamet, stephen wildshire)
I really wanted to develop the syndrom in order to be able to suck up words like a vacuum cleaner but it ended up with no long term results so i quit it.
The key is motivation and keep doing things everyday even if it's little.

My advice to others would be simple: keep the srs reps to a low, don't add too much cards, otherwise you will be flooded with reps in the next few days. Going with the default is recommended but for me I go at a pace of 30 for my sentence deck and 50 a day for my vocabulary deck.
My current level I can understand kanji,read fluently in Japanese(can read manga,news,books,etc and understand shows,news,animes,movies,talk-shows). My concern now is speaking and writing. Sure I can write kanji and a lot of it but I'm slowly working on building these skills up in the next 2 years. That's when I will reach my goal of complete fluency.
Overall I just looked at someone else who succeed and now I know I can succeed, the results are always popping up in front of me(any slight improvement is a sign of success)

I would like to share a story actually. This summer I went to japan for a month and I met another gaijin (but most of the time I avoid spending time with non japanese speaking people since my purpose was to improve)
This guy was litteraly fluent in japanese, expression, mimic and so on, He has been living there for less than 2 years (1 year and 4 months) but he really spoke like every japanese do.
But he couldn't read kanji and japanese at all. (just some hiragana).
He told me that he didn't learn japanese at all, books were boring to him.
What he did is to simply speak everyday with japanese people everywhere, youngs waiting outside and having fun, restaurant , everywhere in the street, girls...
And he actually did show me how to engage conversation with random people at night etc..
What I want to point out is that, I m fully convinced that you have done the most difficult part, reading.
If you are not living in japan right now, then when you'll move there you'll in a few months reduce the amount of times you need to speak ペラペラ
But damn you did it ... maybe I could if i was more strict with myself.

At the moment I'm living in Canada and going to college too. I haven't been to Japan yet but I willl probably go once my program finishes next year. I've heard stories similar to that, there are a lot of people who reach native-level speaking fluency but when it comes to reading/writing, they struggle a lot. I definitely know my speaking is horrible and needs improvement. I've been practicing for a while now but the improvement has been a small amount. It did take me a while to gain the ability to read kanji,understand both written Japanese and spoken Japanese. Overall, I will get to my goal within the next 2 years or so.
It gets easier over time. I know now I can own Japanese really well, it will just take more time. What I love about reading is that, it helps a lot for speaking the language as well. You can understand the written text, making understanding the spoken language more much easier. I always look at motivating myself more and more. With that only, I can definitely get good!

I actually cheated a bit when I corrected 経営 and 規模 by googling one of the phrases and finding the original transcript of the CM :p The first sentence and the X part that I filled in i did on my own before checking though, otherwise it would be no fun. Just one more X to go! I couldn't get it and I only know what it says from cheating so I'll let someone else figure it out.

火曜と木曜の夕方２時間を使ってディスカッションを行いました。テーマはビジネス英会話とニューズウィークからランダムに選びます。ディベートになったり時には雑談になったりもしましたが、日本語は一切使わないというルールで楽しく続けることができました。
TOEICのスコアを上げるためだけでしたら他にも勉強法はあると思います。ただ私達の場合使える英語を楽しく学ぶということがテーマでしたので、その点で非常に効果的な勉強法だったと思います。
