尻取り forum game! - Splatted - 2011-11-14 とっとと pudding cat Wrote:Yeah, I'm still confused too. Are you saying you combined かれえ and かりい to make かれい? Or that カレー is actually pronounced かれい? Or that you just changed え to い for the hell of it?Omoishinji Wrote:ー is used as substitute for a word in あ行. When writing in Haragana ー isn't used. カレー ⇔ カリー is only to say that the two words are the same word. The word next in sequence after カレー was 医学博士 (いがくはくし). カレー was mentally changed to かれい, with isn't that much to worry about.^Very confusing! Is ー some kind of あ行 wildcard in しりとり? I don't see otherwise how え could change to い Edit: Surreal Wrote:水音Wtf! lol 尻取り forum game! - Nuriko - 2011-11-14 取っ組み合い 尻取り forum game! - theasianpleaser - 2011-11-15 五十嵐(いがらし) 尻取り forum game! - Omoishinji - 2011-11-15 pudding cat Wrote:The word *wild card* wasn't used. It's the same thing when the お sound is drawn out, you write おう, in for example 王(おう), instead of おお. So カレー would in hiragana be written かれい, hence why the following word started with い. Btw, what I think made your explanation confusing, Omoishinji, was that for some reason you wrote カレー→カリー... Maybe you meant to write カレー→カレイ? 尻取り forum game! - Nuriko - 2011-11-15 有象無象 尻取り forum game! - Tori-kun - 2011-11-15 Ok.. Does that mean that えい is pronounced like ええ? I thought the い was pronounced, so ええ was quite different from えい. I tried saying ええ (as in Yes) a couple of times and it naturally comes out different from the れい in れいか. It's just as likely to be a bad habit I've gotten in to, but it sounds right to me. 尻取り forum game! - Surreal - 2011-11-16 フクロウ [梟] No no, ええ is different from えい, you're not wrong about that and you definitely shouldn't change your pronounciation to make them sound the same all the time. Like I said, I really can't explain very well how it works (someone else up for it?), it just makes sense to write it as かれい... I guess ええ gives me more of a sense of two different sounds instead of just one long sound. Though sometimes えい can be pronounced like in the exclamation "えい!!!”, which is different from just a long え sound, sometimes it is very much like just a drawn out え, for example (scroll down to the Japanese pronounciation) http://www.forvo.com/word/%E6%88%90%E5%8A%9F/ has a sound in 成 that is basically the same as カレー's last sound, kind of. Like I said, I'm bad at explaining this, I've just been going on intuition most of the time. If you want to get a good pronunciation, the safest bet is probably doing what Magamo always recommends. That is, using Audacity or a similar program to record native speech, record yourself copying the thing while listening to the speech, comparing the two, rinse and repeat.
