Confused in ためす、 こころみる、 してみる - matrixofdynamism - 2011-10-24

As far as I know してみる is used when we 'try doing something'. And just ~てみる has the meaning of meaning of trying out something.

例: 友達に電話をしてみる。 try calling a friend.
例: 店員にきいてみる。 try asking the shop assistant.

Now the confusion I have is with this -> 試。 This kanjis gives the verbs ためす and
こころみる。
As per the dictionary both of these verbs seem to have almost same meaning as well.
ためす means 'to try out, to test, to attempt'; while こころみる has the meaning of 'to try, to test'.

I am totally confused which is used when since they all three seem to have the same meaning. The first when is actually used with ~te forms of the verbs and the other two are verbs that also from the same kanji!

Summary: Confused between usage of してみる, こころみる, ためす.
Also would 試してみる and 試みてみる have any meaning?

This thread is very similar to your other thread.
Maybe try putting similar posts in the The "What's this word/phrase?" thread?

For one thing, you should use a better dictionary than edict (used by rikaichan, jisho.org, and many free websites/apps). Edict is good as a gloss, but as you've seen, it's not very exact, particularly when differentiating synonyms.

Your question is actually answered pretty nicely in the site linked by someone else in the other thread:
Quote:Try
やってみる;the most broad meaning. I’ll try some lime ice cream. Let’s try flamenco dancing. If it doesn’t work out, whatever, we’re just killing some time here.
$$$ KIDS
試みる:こころみる; to attempt a difficult thing. Unlike やってみる、 you have a lot invested in whatever you are trying, and it tests the limits of your capabilities and/or tenacity.
試す:ためす: usually means to test out a thing. “can I try it before I buy it?” “He tested his serum on animals first.” Etc.

The "What's this word/phrase?" thread is not working.
