Problem with doing SRS reps - Kyosys - 2011-09-27

i was kinda lazy on reps myself, but I also have a huge sweet tooth. So I said, okay every 3 reps, I get to take one piece of candy, and only then (same goes for adding). Worked pretty well, I haven't missed a day since, and I've found it to be much easier. Of course this works better when it's little pieces and not, say, mars bars.

that would be sweet if it was only mars bars haha. But yea I get the picture, reward yourself with something in return for a few reps (or set limits and that will be your break, until your done that set number of reps)

Nagareboshi Wrote:Maybe there is some way to improve reviewing cards. So far the common method is to add cards, review them many times for months to come, and after some months the same cards pop-up again. Some counter this by changing the settings, so that once you push easy, the cards show up again in a few months.

I noticed the following with my Genki I, II, AIAIJ, Kanji in Context decks. When I stopped and reduced the number of decks before starting KO.2001, and merging all the vocab decks together, I stopped doing daily reviews for some weeks. When I loaded up a deck that I haven't been reviewing for a long time, I still remembered most of it very well. Even words that I could hardly remember were "there" all of a sudden. And I am not talking about words I could have seen somewhere on the net.

So why not try the following. Review the cards in your deck until you reached 1000 or 2000 reps which should hardly take much time. Then let the deck rest for some months and review the deck once more. If you still know most of the words, or whatever it is that you are reviewing, retire the entire deck. There will be words that you don't remember, as is normal, so fail them. Collect those few cards, move them to an active deck, and spread them out again.

You will spend less time on single decks, but this comes with a price tag, you have to have more than one deck for it to work. If its an ongoing project, you will inevitably run into the same cards over and over and over again, unless you start deleting them. But this might work as well. Give it a try, doesn't hurt, since you should be at the level where you are less dependend on the SRS anymore. Smile
I think what happened with me was that, my computer broke down a while back and I didn't get a new one(laptop in this case) until end of august, so my reps were on and off. I think that period of time made me get lazy on my reps, since I would catch up and only be filled with more reps, because I missed a few days. But now that I'm back I can use my computer freely(it's my personal laptop), I'm still getting back into the mood of doing srs reps. I actually did take a few long breaks(few days or so) and for my mature cards, I remembered 90% of it, so it definitely tells me if I do miss a day or to, it won't kill me. But it's all about maintaining and having fun with it.

I mean of course you can include mars bars, but then I'd make them "cost" more reps, so you're not stuffed after doing 15 reps

I think I've found the reason for srs lazyness. I seem to be having computer fatigue (when I get bored/lazy/tired of the computer I also get tired of doing srs reps). Because I always get things done during the morning, waiting till late day is a bad choice. Because all I want to do is just be lazy with jp during the night.

So ways of getting past this is: get it all done in the early parts of the day(Get a good nights sleep). take breaks, entertain oneself and timebox well. Since this takes less than 1 hr everyday, timeboxing will be key here

I always do srs on my ipod with ankimobile. The computer has way too many distracting things on it. I think that probably helps too.

I actually do get distracted but with jp stuff on my laptop. What usual happens now a days is, once I do finish my reps for my two decks, I feel to lazy to add new cards that I'm planning on implementing. I'll see by the end of this week if I still have the same problem.

I got myself motivated again and doing my reps again. This time around I do it fast and make it enjoyable. I think all I need was to get myself motivated to do it again, it didn't take long. That's one of things I like about myself, may be done one day but the next, I'm up and running.
