An easy to read daily newspaper - Oniichan - 2011-09-25

I've never seen this mentioned before on the forums so I'm sharing it now. Asahi publishes a daily newspaper for elementary schoolchildren. It's called 朝日小学生新聞 and costs about US$20 per month. All kanji has furigana and the level is level-appropriate. It's printed on standard paper and in color. The articles cover things like current events, Japanese culture, geography, nature, etc. There are comics and ads too. I'm not sure if copies can be bought individually at bookstores (I've never checked) as all my copies come from a family that passes them on to me after their children have read them. IMHO, it's a really good resource for those living in Japan that aren't quite ready for the regular newspaper.

I found their website: http://www.asagaku.com/shogakusei.html

And here is a page with samples: http://www.asagaku.com/shidoku.html

Edit: There's a middle school version too (朝日中学生新聞) ! Check the above link for samples.

This looks like a great resource. The short length of newspaper articles makes them very convenient. Anyway, do you know if they have an iPad version?

Sorry, I don't know. I don't see anything on the website that suggests they do. You could call their subscription line and ask I guess.

(from the FAQ)

Q.購読するにはどうすればいいですか?

A.いずれかの方法でお申し込みいただけます。
①お近くのASA(朝日新聞販売所)に直接お申し込みください
②ウェブサイトからお申し込みください。コチラ
③お電話(通話無料)でお申し込みください。TEL:0120-415843

Or better yet, email them. home@asagaku.com

Thanks for the info, Oniichan. Judging from their website, it looks doubtful that they have it. I suppose I need to wait a few more years for newspapers to adjust to the e-reader market.
