Piece-watching Subs2Srs using a video game controller - foodcubes - 2011-09-02

I've been using Subs2Srs to watch shows line by line, and just wanted to share a trick that I've found. If you get tired of sitting at the keyboard, or if you want faster way to interact with Anki, you can simply get a free game controller program like "Xpadder" and then remap the game buttons as Anki shortcuts.

I've set it up as:

Right buttons = 1,2,3,4 (again, hard, good, easy)
Right shoulder button one = spacebar (shows back of card)
Right shoulder button two = F5 (replays video clip)

Left shoulder button one = Ctrl+E (edit card)
Left shoulder button two = Ctrl+Shift+S (suspends card)

In addition, I've made "3-dimensional flash cards" by making all of my English definition fields with white font so that they will effectively be invisible until I use the edit card feature (Ctrl+E). (The font is black and visible in the edit card mode.) This way I can stay monolingual the majority of the time, yet have a definition easily available when I need it.

I too use a wireless gamepad and sit back while doing reps (large screen helps)- it's very relaxing and I also recommend it.

Just a piece of advice. Keep in mind that if you have an unreliable button or a happy trigger finger, you might want to consider using "enter" instead of "spacebar". As the "enter" key will not auto grade if you double tap it on accident.

(On a random note, I've looked into the source code to try to make a plugin to make the spacebar behave like the enter key but never had any luck with that.)

This a great thread! I never thought of using a video game controller with Subs2Srs. Could anyone recommend a (cheap but) reliable wireless gamepad please?
