How much do you re-do? (immersion) - jettyke - 2011-08-18 Concerning immersion in Japanese How much do you... * Reread books * reread passages of articles * rewatch media * relisten to podcasts * etc. Keeping a wide variety in immersion is good for staying interested. Repetition is good for paying attention to words and the like + good for learning and remembering words. When immersing yourself, how do you deal with these 2 things: variety & repetition How much do you re-do? (immersion) - jcdietz03 - 2011-08-18 Repetition: The author's (or character's) favorite words will be used over and over again. You don't need to worry about that. After 3-4 times, you will want to look up the word. So try to find a work you like and stick with it. For variety I got nothin'. How much do you re-do? I don't look up words until I know I'm missing something, or they bug me. I have yet to re-read anything except for Yotsuba&, and that was to see how much I had progressed. And I just read a few chapters. When I read, it's for fun. When I re-read, it'll also be for fun. As for variety, I simply have a lot of things. Books, manga, movies, anime, etc etc... And lots of each. I've always got something in each category I want to watch (or re-watch) and just do whatever I want. It's like AJATT, without the A's and T's. More like, 'Japanese when I danged well feel like it.' JWIDWFLI. I don't think my name for it will catch on as well as his did. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - zachandhobbes - 2011-08-18 I don't re-read books in english and I'm pretty good at reading english anyways, so I figure it might work the same for Japanese. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - pudding cat - 2011-08-18 reread books: No, it's boring reread passages of articles: maybe read through, go over words/parts I'm not sure of and then read once more rewatch media: I might rewatch films once in a while if I like them but not solely for learning purposes relisten to podcasts: No, I concentrate on it less if I've heard it before With regard to repetition, although I don't repeat the exact same things I like to watch the same kinds of things. I watch a lot of police/detective/medical drama so a lot of the same vocab comes up over and over again. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - dtcamero - 2011-08-18 something i notice works really well is kind-of like re-reading... I'll read a manga and then watch the same work's anime version with j-subs. I've done this so far with akira, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood and ghost in the shell SAC1 and its pretty cool... you really understand everything front to back and i feel it helps with overall listening ability. Read 6 volumes of Death Note. Started watching the anime and then realized that the anime is extremely bad and boring and so I gave up. Might have been because I had already read and watched Death Note 3 years ago though... How much do you re-do? (immersion) - Omoishinji - 2011-08-18 * Reread books - Haven't had a chance yet, but have a couple I want to re-read. * Reread passages - Regularly. Sometimes in one sitting. Other times over a period of one week. * Re-watch program or movie - All the time. In the past this included listening to it in English first, but I don't do it that any more. Usually, one program over several days, or one week period. * re-listen to audio files - Daily. * Repeat the pronunciation of new or known words - Daily * Reread passage verbally - Daily How much do you re-do? (immersion) - NoSleepTilFluent - 2011-08-18 reread books. I haven't made it through a book at all. I have one book about some girl that has everyone dieing around her. I've reread the first 4 pages maybe 5 times since i got the book 6 months ago. Passages I don't do newspaper articles often but I've tried to do 1000moji and I've never finished one. Media Always replay replay replay same dramas movies etc. I don't get tired of them when I mix them up. I have about 600mb of media and it constantly grows so yeah. podcasts No Music 50/50 split between english and Japanese. In japan I like the time on the train (when most people don't talk anyways) to listen to some english and reset my brain so when i step off the train I can fully absorb more Japanese. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - travis - 2011-08-18 I'll reread something if it's short, like a newspaper article, especially if it was difficult to read originally. I don't reread books, but try to read a series instead. For movies/series I rip the audio and just have it playing at work, I can basically listen to almost an entire season in a day. I find it easier to listen to than audiobooks or podcasts, which I just tune out and ignore. I think maybe because of all the extra background noises, like doors slamming, explosions or whatever grab my attention more. I also find I remember when a section that I don't understand is about to come up, and just start listening more carefully. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - Tori-kun - 2011-08-18 jettyke, reread books: No, it's boring <- yep. reread passages of articles: often. until i understand fully ![]() rewatch media: I might rewatch films once in a while if I like them but not solely for learning purposes <- Byousoku 5cm (watched it like 20 times or so?? lol), a few good anime episodes or passages or some special phrases in books such as Byousoku or Kino (I like the prologues) relisten to podcasts: Yes. <- actually I have only like 20 episodes of HOTCAST/Tokyo Local and I listen to them in a loop, still trying to get the hang of 'Listen 10,000 hours', but seemingly that does not work. なるほど~ How much do you re-do? (immersion) - ta12121 - 2011-08-18 Personally I only re-read books+media if I like it or is interested in it. Other than that, I usual put words/sentences into my anki deck and use that for my repetition. But for random immersion, etc I usual just keep reading new stuff. Same with media, if I like it I repeat it several times. It works but as long as you keep it up(long-term). How much do you re-do? (immersion) - TheVinster - 2011-08-18 Reread books: I'd like to think I will go back and reread this Japanese book I have, but it's part of a series, so I should probably just go buy a new one. Reread passages of articles: Never, I guess. Rewatch media: Only if I really like it. As such, I've watched 花より団子 (both seasons) about 3 times over, 花ざかりの君達へ also 3 times over, and have been rewatching the same handful of しゃべくり007 episodes I have. Relisten to podcasts: Yes. I don't understand them really (my listening comprehension is terrible), so I often didn't even pick up the dialogue from the initial run, or even the second run... How much do you re-do? (immersion) - kainzero - 2011-08-18 i reread/rewatch stuff a lot. especially because i didn't fully understand it the first time around. it's a good way to measure progress. i also reread english books a lot. i feel like the contents and take home messages change based on my personal maturity and experiences. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - Shakunatz - 2011-08-19 reread books: Not yet reread passages of articles: if the article is fun or is useful (e.g. recipes, pc tips) I might re-read it rewatch media: I don't rewatch movies but I happen to rewatch dorama or dubbed series as the big bang theory in Japanese No matter how many times I hear the same jokes, I laugh every time.relisten to podcasts: A lot! In particular "Green Planet" and in general podcast about science / nature where more listening = more information grabbed How much do you re-do? Try to enrich people with your words, and they'll try to do the same. There's no need to tear people down. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - jettyke - 2011-08-19 @wccrawford +1 How much do you re-do? (immersion) - JimmySeal - 2011-08-19 I think rereading is extremely useful, especially in the early stages. When you're starting out, you're coming across all sorts of new word patterns and vocabulary and adjusting your thought processes to fit that new information. Reading through the text a second time really helps to solidify what you've learned. Still, it's important not to reread stuff too soon, lest it become a chore. When I was reading my first few books in Japanese, I would mitigate this by going through the chapters in a staggered pattern - reread chapter 1 after reading chapter 2; reread chapter 2 after reading chapter 3, and so on. Now that I'm learning Chinese, I have 8 books (2 novels and 6 volumes of comics) that I'm going through in a big cycle. I've read the novels three times each, and the comics twice each, and I'm planning on doing one more final pass through all of them. For the next bunch of books I take on, I'll probably only do one second pass, and after that I probably won't re-read Chinese books anymore. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - howtwosavealif3 - 2011-08-19 I've read like 30+ books and I have yet to reread any of them.... at least in full... maybe a couple random pages. Just follow AJATT... if somehow re-doing something is enjoyable then do it but I wouldn't just force yourself to do it for the sake of improvement. I don't rewatch movies or dramas unless I've forgotten at lesat 80% of the thing which would probably take 10 years lol. As for other media like japanese tv show I sometimes rewatch that by accident cause I didn't realize I already saw it... like and I rewached this one for fun because it's so fascinating not that there's any japanese to learn from this... (I already know everything they said but ) and I guess I wouldn't mind rewatching this since it's only 50 seconds and funny. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - jhenson - 2011-08-19 In the earlier stages of learning, there is probably more value in re-reading, re-doing, books, audio, whatever, simply due to there being less really good material available for that level. It's paved the way to really having no difficulty reading/listening to the language. Then again, it's making my speaking ability go up as well. You gotta love immersion, no matter what way you use it, it will have a good effect on you're learning. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - Rina - 2011-08-19 I re listen to podcasts and re watch drama (and ayu ready), quite often, I'd say like everyday. For example, Ayu ready has 74 episodes (I think), I started watching it in may, and Im still on episode 33, everyday I turn ayu ready (or dramas) on and just et it be, I learned a LOT. I learned japanese gestures, facial expressions and of course, even though it doesn't increase much I also increase my vocab. Other than that, I don't usually reread stuff, but it is a good idea, and the books I'm now reading I want to reread them again some months after reading them, or even one year or more. The rereading I can do is really through "Japanese through newspapers" textbooks and internet articles. How much do you re-do? (immersion) - Conditional - 2011-08-19 I prefer reading multiple articles about the same topic -- a nice mix of repetition (since they use similar vocabulary) and novelty (since they cover slightly different things). |
