Fostering Autonomy in Language Learning - nest0r - 2011-08-05

Free e-book that some might find useful: http://ilac2010.zirve.edu.tr/Fostering_Autonomy.pdf

‘The theme of this book is fostering autonomy in language learning. The papers have
been grouped into six parts each representing a different aspect of researchers’ and
practitioners’ attempts to understand, explain, support and develop learner autonomy
in language learning both within the taught curriculum and outside it... ’

Some background on the concept of learner autonomy: http://edutechwiki.unige.ch/en/Learner_autonomy

What I'm going through at the moment is Chapter 6, ‘Tools to Enhance Second Language Writing Autonomy: Can we do things better?’ (Related to my interest in cultivating the development of metacognitive knowledge and skills in various ways.)

For that paper, the part of the abstract that grabbed me was: “... This paper reports on research in which metacognition knowledge was provided by way of reading a scientific paper on L2 writing processes and products; and awareness of agency and autonomy was exposed by way of keeping a writing journal to consign thoughts and ideas about writing (before, during and after pedagogical interventions). Overall, the two led to better agentic actions and improved performance. Autonomy as awareness, involvement, intervention, creation and transcendence (Nunan, 1997) seems to respond to stimulation of consciousness.”
