Japanese Subs Google Group - tnall - 2011-08-01

Hi again everyone,

So this will be my third attempt at creating a Japanese subtitling group. I've learned from my last two tries (completely original name this time!) and am hoping this third time will be the charm :p

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/japanese-subs

Here's how it will work:

1) I (or anyone else) will post a topic with a link to the video along with Google Doc that contains the original English script as reference.
2) Users add the Japanese lines.

This won't be a traditional fansubbing group in that we won't actually be doing timing or anything like that. In other words, the name for this group should probably be more "Japanese Transcripts Group." Either way, I'll be using the transcripts we generate to make subtitles using the timing from the DVD subs.

Also, I know there's a Japanese Anime Transcripts Wiki out there but this group will differ in that we'll be covering dubbed shows and movies as well.

I'd like for us to focus on one project at a time, but anyone is free to start new ones if they have the video link and start a Google doc. I thought as a beginning project we'd start on the dub for Friends since it's decently easy to understand and the dub is pretty much faithful to the original.

The group is set to private but I'll be adding everyone when I get chance, so pretty much no more than 24 hours after you apply.

よろしくお願いします。

um videos get removed and you're bettter off just watching the thing you want to watch with subtitles with korean subs (google translated to japanese than doing this)

I know this is a solution someone has proposed before, but I don't think it's good enough. The point of this project is to get exact subs. Translation from Korean subs aren't going to be accurate most of the time.

Also, the videos will be set to private so I'm hoping they won't be removed.

So you're trying to get learners to come up with exact Japanese subtitles rather than using stuff from d-addicts, kitsunekko, etc.?

Is your aim just for the learning experience of transcription?

I was so hoping it would have been another name that was previously used...

I think his idea was to transcribe stuff that didn't already have JP subtitles.

And yes, wccrawford is right in saying that it's for shows you can't find subtitles for. I don't know about you, but I'm not about to watch a show that I'm not particularly interested in just because that's the only thing I can find subs for. Not to say that the shows with subs offered on those sites are all horrible or anything, it's just like 90% is not to my taste.

Plus, exact subtitles for dubs are almost completely non-existent, which is a shame since I think those are the most useful for learning Japanese.

Yes, I assumed you weren't duplicating the subtitles. Seems like a lot of work for learners with the possibility of perpetuating mistakes they can't get feedback for?

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing timings for all those transcripts out there (one of them being the wiki you mentioned which I believe is run by a forum member, Kiki or something?)

Can't? Sharing the subs means others will probably use them. And can correct them. And it's coming from native audio anyhow. It's not like they are translating from English.

Japanese Subs Google Group - nest0r - 2011-08-01

So you'd want a system where native speakers can verify the accuracy?

Japanese Subs Google Group - tnall - 2011-08-01

That would be ideal but the chances of native speakers needing Japanese subs for their dubs seems kind of slim.

Either way, with group efforts I'm sure most mistakes would be caught before we even made the subtitles. Again, making transcripts for dubs is not 無理 because we know what the Japanese translation is trying to approximate and we'll have the English script there in the Google Doc to help lead us.

So maybe I should correct my mission statement for the group: we're not out to be subtitling any random Japanese show/anime but (for the time being at least) release subs for Japanese dubs. Maybe the name of the group should be "Japanese Dub Subs" or something :p
