Anyone studying kanji through Nazotte Oboeru on the Nintendo DS recently? After reading about it on the thread on DS Kanji games some time ago, I picked up the Kaiteihan version and started from first grade, progressing so far to the 4th grade.
The game is great to learn/remember kanji and to learn new vocabulary, and used together with Anki to make flashcards of any new word it looks like it is effective to build both vocabulary and kanji recognition; not sure though if the kakikata will be easily remembered later.

How does it work for you?

When I tried it last, my ability was below first grade (lol) so I didn't get anything out of it. I should probably look at it again.

My recommendation is to get one of the Kanji Test programs for the DS. Either the Kanken or Kanjunken would be a good choice. With the Kanken you can start at level 10, which is the first grade elementary. The Kanjunken starts at level 8, which is the third grade elementary.

I had Nazzotte Oboeru previously and had returned (sold it back) as it was just to difficult. It seems to be designed for adults Japanese speakers. The Kanken has been a great enjoyment to use.

@Omoishinji: Thank you for the suggestions; did try Kanken DS3 a few times, but to me nothing beats the clean interface of Nazotte Oboeru, plus the sheer amount of vocabulary I end up learning. Also I am hopelessly addicted to it already- will check the Kanjunken though.

@wccrawford: When you have the time/opportunity to play it again, let me know how you enjoy it now. My japanese is intermediary, and I am learning a lot of new vocab+kanji.

I am addicted to Nazotte Oboeru... best kanji learning game for DS ever IMO. Very easy to use. i've cleared levels 1-5 with 100% so far. It really makes picking up new words a heck of a lot easier when i throw them in Anki.

I much prefer it to the Kanken series. As you say, Nazotte is clean, fun and addictive. What else could you ask for?

I believe you need to think about what you're doing though. What I mean is, it's important you have some method to remember how to write the characters whether that be Heisig or something else. Nazotte is based on repeating something until you get it and then leaving it behind; we know that's just not good enough. You will forget.

As has been mentioned, it's also good to copy out interesting examples and get them into Anki. Again, because Nazotte does everything in levels, once you've completed a section you won't (for the most part) see the examples again unless you are good at going back and reviewing yourself.

I think it is a superb learning aid but not a great memorization tool.

Yeh, I think that it is a supplementary thing. It's something to do in your spare time that eases the pain of general kanji readings. It's definitely not an end all approach to learning kanji. You do benefit a lot from it though.

I use the Kanken DS3 and the IE Kanken everyday without fail. I only use the Kanjukuken as a break from the Kanken. I like being able to write in the Kanji or Haragana to test my knowledge, and to retain new words. I only wished that they had native pronunciations after each question.

@GreenAirth: True, Nazotte itself is not enough to memorize the kanji; my current approach is to write down every kanji/word that is new to me in Anki and keep reviewing. I tried Heisig before, got up to 600+ kanji, but the method is just not fun anymore, and I have trouble studying when I am not having fun. So I combine my regular japanese classes (chuukyuu currently) that I love so much, with its emphasis in repeatedly handwriting the kanji, with Anki and Nazotte and as much manga as I can get...

I am well aware that Heisig is much more effective to remember how to write the kanji, and I would like to try it again, but the dedication it requires combined with the regular classes is too much at this point.
