The 素直ness and naivety of Japanese girls can also get annoying at times. It's interesting how important the concept of 素直 is when it comes to Japanese women. I recently was stupid and led a Japanese girl on, and I had to explain that I thought it was a bad idea to date (I feel bad about leading her on, but I'm not a complete sleeze--I didn't sleep with her when she gave me the chance). Anyway, she sent me a rather angry e-mail where she speculated about why I didn't want to date her. One of the ones she wrote was 私が素直じゃないから? "Is it because I'm not obediant?" I also don't like the 素直ness a lot of the time, and when I responded to her I did mention that I don't like meek women, and that her level of 素直ness had nothing to do with it. Anyway, I'm an American, and though I agree there are many friendly attractive western girls around, I definitely meet more friendly attractive women in Japan than America. I meet people with good and bad personalities in both countries, but Japan is winning in the beauty department. Doesn't have anything to do with them being Asian, and I actually feel bad that women are expected to be so fashionable and spend so much time on make-up. But when it comes down to it, more Japanese women are thin and in shape, and that means that there are more beautiful women in Japan. I also don't really have much patience with the argument that women in America are so pressured by celebrities and the media to be thin. We are the fattest country in the world--more people should be thin. Edit: Note also, that generally Japanese men are also thinner and in better shape than American men. It's not like a lot of fat men are expecting their girls to be skinny. I admit though, there's more pressure to be thin on the women. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - aphasiac - 2011-07-05 I thought the same thing when I arrived in Taiwan - man the girls here are so so pretty! Thing you got to realise is - there's a huge amount of social pressure of girls in Asia to be skinny and pretty. They never have a dress-down day. Asian girls aren't really any more attractive, you get the same ratio of 1-10's face-wise as Europe (although this may be swayed if you have yellow fever) but they're just very good at buying cute outfits, putting on makeup and not eating. Yeh good for us, but in Taiwan at least there's now a whole generation who are super-insecure about their looks, are addicted to shopping and hooked on buying expensive brands, and are super paranoid about eating food. Seriously, this is one of the best places for tasty cheap food in the world, but no one eats it - it's ridiculous! EDIT: and to give some love to white girls (to counter the yellow plague) - no one dresses SEXY here, everyone is just "cute". That gets old quick. On and Taiwanese girls have no boobs. EDIT 2: Mezbup, I like the blog, your excitement is contagious- keep it up and take photos damn you! Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - thecite - 2011-07-06 Haha, I was looking up 'yellow-fever' on Urban Dictionary which then led me to the entry for 'Wapanese': http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Wapanese&defid=84821 Pretty hilarious stuff, glad to say that I don't qualify for Wapanese status. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - kitakitsune - 2011-07-06 This quote is money. Interestingly, Wapanese are generally though of as “failures” and rejects within their own culture. Social scientists such as myself speculate that it was their failure to gain acceptance within their own culture than has lead many a white geek to seek out Japan’s culture as a surrogate; however, they’d be shattered to know that the insular and somewhat racist Japanese society would be even less accepting of them than the people of their true and native culture. Thin ≠ in shape. Most Japanese girls aren't in good shape at all. Oh and congrats on getting to Japan, Mezbup. Have a blast! Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - Javizy - 2011-07-06 I agree about the 素直 thing being annoying. I'm often あきれた at some of the ways women are portrayed in dramas and films; you'd think the director was a sexist dinosaur if you didn't know it was a realistic representation. kitakitsune Wrote:Interestingly, Wapanese are generally though of as “failures” and rejects within their own culture. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - mezbup - 2011-07-06 K so I went and checked out 新宿 yesterday and 原宿 too. Tokyo is just so big... stretches on forever. Kinda easy to get lost sometimes. Went to ニコニコ動画’s headquarters! bought a tshirt that says 無責任 on it in 原宿. I get funny looks wearing it here but that's the point I guess... haha it's kinda funny getting away with being a total foreigner at times. Other times I don't really wanna feel like a "foreigner" cos it's kinda weird. Like whenever I see a 外人 I totally get how the Japanese feel cos I automatically assume that person doesn't speak Japanese and knows nothing about Japan. Unless, that 外人 is with other Japanese people and speaking Japanese then it's like...ah they're just like everyone else. I bought lots of books yesterday... some novels and 教科書, plus センター試験 books for all the subjects I need. I'm going to University in Auckland next year but I wanna go to a uni in Japan and since going on an exchange program is simply not an option I thought i'd try get in the way everyone else does and just take the entrance exams. The plan is do my first year at Auckland uni next year in 2012 and then 2013 spend in Tokyo as sort of a gap year just studying hard for entrance exams with the aim to pass in 2014. 2.5 years? Guess it's doable. 頑張ります! Went drinking with a couple of friends last night too. THAT was interesting. 飲み放題 of course So for 2000円 I got absolutely plastered which I just couldn't believe cos that's like $30 where I'm from which would get you about 3 beers. So, you could get tipsy perhaps but short of buying yourself a bottle of spirits and just downing it by yourself at home theres no way you can get drunk for $30 while you're out in NZ. Haha... Seriously, not a good idea though because today I have the mean hangover. Was kinda funny though cos we were in 新宿 looking for a place to drink and you know how theres constantly people on the streets doing 客寄せ... this one guy was just SUPER しつこい and wouldn't give up and finally we we're like.. 負けた! ok, take us there! Turns out it was a great place! There was like a fish tank in the drinking part. Was cool. Also, tried whale. The verdict? Everyone in the west complaining about it has obviously never tried it cos that shit was tasty. Tried horse. The verdict? Slightly below average. I see why it's not popular as a food. It's not terrible (I like it better than lamb (i'm strange and hate lamb)) but it's in no way great. I love horses as creatures so I was kinda opposed to eating it in the first place but then i got drunk and wondered what such a majestic looking beast tasted like and we ordered some. I've had ファっキン for breakfast every morning so far. コンソメ flavored chips just rock. チキン南蛮ラップ is yum! Really gonna wanna come back to Japan to eat it every time I get a craving. I've spent a lot of money. I had 9万 2 days ago and now I have 4万 and still have to buy my 新幹線 tickets and survive the next week and a half. I have some more money on my credit card but you know. Wound up spending a lot just on おみやげ for friends n family n gf. Maybe I should cut back on spending a little! I totally hate coins so Japan is a pain in the ass in that respect cos when am I ever going to use a 10円 coin I mean get real! K so I know you use them a lot n I totally get the point but in NZ I just use my EFTPOS card (it's an ATM card, not a credit card) to pay for absolutely everything so I never need to carry cash anywhere. Here, that just doesn't seem to fly so it's cash or GFTO. Which i'm not a fan of. Also don't like paper money, it's a dumb idea. Much prefer plastic money. I'm off to asasuka today! Yoyogi too... and 東大!Then going to see Rainbow Bridge at night.. woot. Fun fun fun. Let's just hope this hangover shakes itself off before too long. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - thisiskyle - 2011-07-06 Hey, sounds like you're having a blast. I was one of those clueless 外人 when I was strolling around Tokyo . And yes, 飲み放題 is great. That is unless you live out in the 田舎 with shit trains and end up being the DD and having to pay the same price as everyone else for a bottomless coke.
Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - Rekkusu - 2011-07-07 Ah yes the coins, first you'll hate the 10円, then the 1円 as they slowly start to fill up your wallet, and then once you learn to deal with those the 'lucky' 5円 starts to get pesky... Ah I too miss using a cash card on everything >.>. Though I must say for tourists it is much easier to get by here, since everything still is focused on coins. Back in The Netherlands it is getting harder and harder to go by without a cash card, which though nice for the inhabitants is kinda pesky for travelers. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - thecite - 2011-07-07 Objection over whaling and horse slaughter has nothing to do with taste, but I assume you know that. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - dusmar84 - 2011-07-07 Since youre here during summer time make sure you try hayashi chukka. Its cold noodles with usually cucumber, tomato, ham and egg on top. You can only find it in shops during the summer and it is amazing. Also,if you havent yet, cold soba (zaru) with a hefty helping of wasabi and a beer is probably on my top 5 of Japanese food. Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - Tzadeck - 2011-07-07 I'm all about nabe and hot springs. Winter FTW. What makes them any different to cows / pigs? *shrugs* Mezbup'z First Trip To JAPAN!!! - Javizy - 2011-07-07 I was just checking the flight prices again and the cheap ones I mentioned have gooooown. Everything is coming up at £570+. Probably should have made a decision on that rather than waiting around for two weeks... |
