I tried 'katana', pronouncing it with an American accent and a Japanese accent. It failed the American and succeeded with Japanese, like I'd hope.

This might be a neat tool for practicing your Japanese accent.

Doesn't work for me nearly as well as the iOS version does. I haven't noticed any differences in recording quality for my G73 and iPod Touch, but that might be a factor. Plus English works okay...

Bummer. I wonder if it's more picky, or just poorer at its job?

How would you rate your Japanese accent?

Going by my spoken Japanese and looking at it purely from Google's Voice Search (rather than my hardware), I'd have to go with it's poorer at its job. ;p

And it's still very cool, of course, that they finally implemented it this broadly; I'm sure it'll only get better and more extensively used. The possibilities, as always, are endless.

Wait...

“Please note Voice Search is available for US English only.”

How exactly does 2lingual work, then?

Perhaps this doesn't work as well because it's not Google's? Or does Google have some beta version of the multilingual desktop capability hidden away, and 2lingual found it?

Japanese Voice Search - wccrawford - 2011-06-24

That's weird. Everything I can find points to it using Google's tech. Even says that it requires a Speech-to-text capable browser... So it's using the browser to do the work.

This is pretty neat!

Oh, and it looks like 2lingual itself hosts the tools:

Quote:In addition, 2lingual hosts two voice-search tools. Google Multilingual Voice Search makes it easy to Google Voice Search in multiple languages and twitter Multilingual Voice Search makes it easy to Twitter Voice Search in multiple languages. Both voice-search tools require a Speech-to-Text capable browser, like Google Chrome version 11.0.696, for speech input.
From their about page.

Those are the pages, yeah... But the API behind those pages is what we're pondering.

Isn't their Speech API/Voice Search sort of twofold? Like there's the part that allows speech to be parsed by Chrome only (for now), then there's their recognition system that they've trained. Perhaps 2lingual uses the Google communication/parsing part for Chrome, but another non-Google recognition engine thingy?

My Xoom tablet has Japanese voice input via internet built in, but no actual built in Japanese keyboard. XD So API's definitively exist for it.

Whatever Google uses for Japanese for its mobile app is great. It doesn't seem like it's available for the desktop yet, though. My G73 sounds better than my iPod Touch, re: voice recording, but I get near perfect results with their Japanese Translate app, and let's say the 2lingual results have been an exercise in absurdity.
