I extracted all of the text files from Dragon Quest IX and deleted the ones without actual text. There are over 1300 files! Here's a sample:

<PAGE>バートン「また[何/なに]か　たのむかもしれないが\n　そのときは　よろしくな。<END>

The '\n' can simply be removed since they are probably only breaks in the text due to the limited screen size of the DS. Also, <Page> and <End> could be replaced with '\r' to create a column of sentences.

And as for readings:

...[若/わか]いもんが...

all '[' could be removed, and then all '/' replaced with '['.

Anyway, I'm considering editing out the junk from all of the files simultaneously and then dumping them into a spreadsheet. Even with a little automation, it will probably prove to be a lot of work. So, does anyone know if these scripts are already available online (in JP or EN)?

EDIT: Why bother? A: It's a fun game and it has potential as a learning tool since all kanji have furigana.

I don't think the scripts are available already but I only did a quick search using the name of the game + セリフ. Did you try to google some ingame text yet?

never played DQ9. it's the quest 台詞, I think? not sure how the game works. the セリフ集（ストーリー）へ page is down.

found the FFVIII script, yay! I almost forgot about the awesome OST... kinda makes me want to replay it after all the years.

If anyone wants to help with jp. scripts, you could also look for videos on youtube or niconico and then google some story-related ingame text. that's what I just did with FFVIII without even starting the game.

This guy's playthrough is pretty cool btw. He reads all the text and has a pleasent non-nerdy voice Big Grin

I'm sure there's more of these. Do you guys use 実況プレイ's? (if yes which) Could add them as well if there's interest.

That's what I did. You should check out epsxe. With OpenGL 2, all the real-time 3D stuff is in glorious HD, so the battles look awesome. It's a lot better in Japanese too. You'll notice that most of the characters have a unique way of speaking that didn't make it into the translation, and Cloud even had a catchphrase.

yea, the 3D stuff looks awesome in epsxe! I tried out a lot of different settings but 2D backgrounds and FMVs looked horrible on my LCDs (both 1920x1080), like... really pixelated. Text is not as smooth as on PS3 either, some complex Kanji are hard to read.

Your screenshot is 1920x1200. Did you have the same problems?

I actually got the PS3 version off PSN now, so I'm about to start playing.

This is a text-dump of Zelda - Ocarina of Time including the japanese script + the english translation, it's not sorted but you could use CTRL+F to look up stuff. The 3DS Version is almost identical but has more Kanji (and Furigana).
