Might just be an American thing ^^

It's hard to worry about other people's gesture. I constantly forget that a backwards peace sign looks like an insult to British people. In America it means the same as a regular peace sign.

Another one: writing 'x' a few times at the end of a letter or e-mail also just makes Americans think of porn the first few times you do it to them, lol. Or maybe that was just me.

One time (not in Japan), I'm walking down the street with 2 of my Japanese friends and we bump into a classmate of my friend. This classmate was chinese and she was with a Japanese girl. While my Japanese friend was talking to her chinese classmate in English, I was talking to my other Japanese friend in Japanese... the other Japanese girl goes... すみません、日本人ですか？ I was like いいえ、なんで？ n she's like 日本語そんなにうまいなんてハーフなのかなと思って ... I cracked up.

It's also funny, no matter how long any particular one of my Japanese friends has known me, they are all surprised I can read Japanese... even if they've seen me do it before (multiple times).

While talking to girls at a bar, I started joking about my まりもっこり cell phone charm dude, and I said, まりもっこり知ってる？ and, I can't remember exactly what the girls said, but it was something to the effect of, ”逆になんで知ってんのか！？” I guess most foreigners aren't familiar. Made me laugh quite a bit, though Big Grin

My friends and I know that sign and we're from the UK. Maybe it's just not widespread here?

My friend told me that Japanese girls use it a lot in purikura to make their chins seem smaller and more pointy.

Nah, it's pretty common here too. I'm surprised that dizmox doesn't know it.

One funny (to me anyway) thing that happened was when for some reason we were talking about the word 唆る (which was new to me), and I was like, oh yeah, 唆, that's the kanji in 示唆, isn't it. My Japanese friend was like, no, that's wrong. We argued for a bit until I pulled out my dictionary and showed him. I still tease him about it to this day.

Is that meant to be そそる? Very obscure kanji usage.
