Anyone know how to sign up for Mixi short of buying a Japanese SIM card? The .edu workaround no longer works.

Frankly, I hope Mixi gets eaten up by facebook with stupid restrictions like this. I hold grudges

If you have a Japanese friend on Facebook or elsewhere, ask for an invite.

Apparently invites don't circumvent the phone email address thing.

Posts on chiebukuro suggest that it's impossible now without a keitai email address because it's used to verify your age.

How old do I need to pretend to be? Over 20?

Signing up for Mixi - pudding cat - 2011-04-15

Wikipedia says you have to be over 18.

I'll give it a shot, thanks. Could you link me up with that chiebukuro post, please?

Still no luck, unfortunately. They want that damn keitai mail address.

These are the pages I looked at. It's not a case though of just pretending to be over 18. The keitai email address is used to verify that you are over 18 so without it, they can't verify your age and you can't join mixi.

My mistake, I misread that 'impossible' as 'possible'. Yes, I was hoping for a workaround like the .edu thing, doesn't look like one exists. Thanks anyway.

.Edu emails or invites don't circumvent the Japanese cell phone email thing anymore? That's too bad...I was going to offer invite anyone from this community who asked, when I saw this thread's title, but I guess that won't do any good now...

I'll accept your kind offer and give it a shot anyway, if you don't mind.

OK, emailed you.

Thanks, I've sent a reply.

Any email ending in .EDU will work.

You've tried it recently? My email address ends in edu.au, not sure if that would be a problem...
Many people had been reporting that it didn't work anymore as well.

Invited you.

Oh, and a friend of mine signed up for an account with an .edu (not edu.au or anything though) in February, but I'm not sure if they changed things since then.

Thank you.

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately it didn't work. Maybe it would have worked with a .edu and not a .edu.au address, maybe not. It didn't work with my australia.edu address, but I believe they've already cracked down on people using that.

Damn mixi.

Darn...Oh well, Twitter's pretty popular with Japanese people...It seems Mixi's kind of lost it's "newness" factor to Twitter, so a lot of my Mixi friends have moved on to there.

I have a Mixi account, but haven't signed in since 2007. I guess any social site that excludes teenagers is going to be lacking the originality from user contributions unique to that age group.

Do you have any Japanese friends (with a Japanese cellphone)? I got an exgf to make an account for me and then send me the login info. You then can change the cellpohone number after.

Ask your J friends. I'm sure they would be happy to help.
