I'm curious whether ankimini truly is a standalone app or if it requires synching from time to time (to transfer cards to the phone, schedule due dates etc). I ask because I'm looking for a way to review cards on my iphone for a few months without the possibility of synching (no 3g or wifi available) and no access to a computer. Is it possible to transfer an entire deck to the iphone and do daily reviews with the app scheduling due dates without synching?

Assuming you mean AnkiMobile (the paid app), yes it's a completely stand-alone program, with (as far as i know) the same options and card scheduling as the desktop version.

You can even edit or create new cards on there now, so no need for a PC.

Ankimini (the old free version) is deprecated now, not sure about that one..

No, I did mean ankimini, but I'll check out the other iphone app that you mentioned. I thought the paid app was just ankimini for non-jailbroken phones. Thanks.

It sort of used to be, but now Damien has quit his job to develop Anki and Ankimobile full-time. Therefore it's now miles ahead of ankimini ever was, and is actually nicer to use than the desktop version - definitely worth the (slightly high) pricing.

One minor caveat is that the AnkiMobile doesn't have a database repair feature, so if it crashes and borks the database (I have had it happen, but only once in 5 months), you will need to get the database repaired by some external measure. If the phone is jailbroken, you can presumably restore an earlier backup right on the phone (assuming that you make regular manual backups).

It sounds like the ankimobile app would be the best choice then. I'll also make sure to take measures to backup the decks. Every once and a (great) while I'll have access to a computer so I'll probably carry backups on a thumbdrive as well. Thanks for the excellent info.

I wish Damien would develop a version as polished as Ankimobile for the Android OS. Ankidroid beta isn't bad, and is entirely useable, but it still isn't quite the same.

I'm stretched too thin at the moment. Maybe one day

That's true, but should get better in the future. 2.0 will be bringing some big improvements to deck size, which make automatic or semi-automatic backups less painful on a mobile device, and a DB check has become a lot simpler too.
