Why am I so slow? - jettyke - 2011-04-10

It concerns everything :

Homework, the computer, the internet, eating, learning japanese, studying for tests, lifestyle.

Most of the stuff I do could be done 2 or 3 times faster.
...And yet, I do things slowly and in the end of the day I am: "Daaammnn, I got almost nothing done today!"

I have lots of stuff that I have to do but because of this I get like only 1/3 of the things done because I'm slow. Even if I would eliminate all the distractions I would still be quite slow.

And it's even hard to measure how fast I did something, because a human being needs to eat+ toilet, bathroom, drink, talk to family, search for the next album to listen to, clean the room etc.

I can even speed read and yet I'm too lazy to do it.

Shouldn't the question be "Is it bad to be slow?"?
I wish I could do some things slower, especially eating. Eating slowly is one of the healthiest and most enjoyable things you can do. Why change that?
You are not in a race. Enjoy the things you are doing. You might even be remembering things twice as good as people who are as double as fast as you.

If you are focusing on one things at a time (no distractions), I think there's nothing bad with being slow.

The answer was "I have lots of stuff that I have to do but because of this I get like only 1/3 of the things done because I'm slow"

I have deadlines and stuff.

In this case, what am I to do?

As long as you try to single task while going slow, you are fine. I have the same problem as you. Multitasking, moving super fast is the worst thing you could do right now, especially in 2011 with all the vibrational changes.

Why am I so slow? - jettyke - 2011-04-10

The case is:
I have very limited time and gazillion tasks to do. And if I continue the same way, I will definitely not get done even half of them. That's a fact.

And I have to get them done in that given time, no question about that.

Why am I so slow? - jettyke - 2011-04-10

Oops, I forgot about what I won't do.

Actually what I really want is a mental state like this:

Thinking is naturally clear and fast - Imagine a good caffeine buzz
+
Strong interest in the things to be done, passion so to say
+
Addiction to the tasks I'm doing
+
Achievement - to feel that I'm progressing fast
+
No pain, no suffering - I hate these
+
Full Attention to the task, no distractions
+
I want to feel as if I'm RUNNING Big Grin !

Metaphorically: I'm usually only walking but I want to really start running! You see what I mean? Sometimes I have these rushes from music when I feel like doing everything fast ( but I can't depend on music because there is no certainty in that I will have such suitablemusic)

I want to feel a sense of achievement for doing things fast. And to really feel that faster is better (...as far as deadlines are concerned it's needed).

Right now I would say that I don't care about how fast I do things and it's no good.

I need something to motivate me to do things fast without failure. I wonder what it would be.

It's actually good to go slow but I feel where your coming from on this one.A lot of times, you feel you should be doing stuff faster. Timeboxing usual works for me on multiple tasks.

I feel 0 achievement with timeboxing. I never go it to work for the benefit of me.

Most of the time I just manage my timeboxes incorrectly, too much or too little time.

And when a timebox is completed you'd expect me to feel "YEAH!!!" but what I feel = no difference at all. Really, nothing. Any way around it/ how to change it?

Why am I so slow? - EratiK - 2011-04-11

Hey jettyke,
not sure if I can help, but maybe I could clarify some things.

If you don't think clearly, remove the cause, or do some sport, or read philosophy.

To expect passion in everything you do is simply unrealistic. I don't think it's passion that makes you do things quickly. To me, speed is about the advanced state of performing a task. You start by mastering the task, and once it's mastered, you consciously try to make yourself go faster (like speed reading really). Passion makes me want to do things perfectly, not rapidely, I'm usually quite slow on the passionate stuff.

Why would anyone want to be addicted to a task (you'll need to be more precise on this one)?

When completing a task, I usually don't feel achievement, I feel empty. Achievement comes later when you look back.

No pain? Again, I don't know what you are talking about, but painful stuff should be done quickly. If you feel you've dashed through things, well don't be too hard on yourself, you'll do better next time.

Full attention is difficult, especially on boring tasks. Try to do some yoga or some meditation, but monotasking is definitely the way to go. A break every hour can also be good.

You'll feel like running with practice: try to be a little quicker everytime, and in the end, you'll be quick without even thinking about it (practice makes perfect). If you don't make the conscious effort, I don't think you'll change anytime soon.

I don't know what can be motivating to you, but I think about the time I'm loosing. Life is short, the thought of loosing time can really be a strong incentive.

Is this question rethorical or what? Get a girlfriend. No. Get more girlfriends Smile Believe me distraction IS useful sometimes. Even Einstein had a wife.
Keep things balanced, methinks.
Or you could make a journal online so everyone could read it. There you would post in the morning the daily goals - and at the end of the day the achivements. If more people are watching - even online - the more you will feel more compelled to stick to the goals.
Be honest with yourself. Can you really do the things you want in that timeframe? Everyone has their limits, unfortunately. Overlodaing yourself with too many goals to achieve will only cause furstration and demotivation - I've been there. Although it was hard to accept that my limits were so low Sad
Oh well Smile

Time is one of the 5 main ressources in life management . You have only 168 hours a week . And a healthy life statistically imply you already waste 49 of those on sleep . Some activities are made to be enjoyed slowly . Most don't . Get the job done and get it fast .

To be honest, jettyke, I'm thinking of deleting my twitter/facebook account. They take that much time per day! I really feel distracted concerning my Japanese studies, to be hoenst..

Why am I so slow? - Mcjon01 - 2011-04-12

I know what you mean. I think I must have been an elf in a past life, because clearly my motivation to do things is geared toward the immortal lifestyle. If only I wasn't hampered by this feeble human lifespan everything would fall into place.

I had a confession with a reply "no" recently and one thing I can be sure about: I don't want to mess with love right now. It sucks.

Getting the reply was very beneficial as now I can finally concentrate on other things and I was just sitting at home for weeks dreaming about stuff and exchanging emails with that person, not to mention the unbearable suffering.

And no, not a rhetorical question. I really want to know what makes us do things faster.

I've already done that thrice. Now I switched it back on because of needing to cantact some people, and seek advice on university things.

What is amazing, after switching back on for the university things I haven't used FB for other reasons anymore. I set a limit that I only have a right to use FB to ask about the uni stuff.
And it has been working for a month now.

My twitter feeds are so boring that I don't have any interest in reading themBig Grin

What helps with FB is not accepting friend requests from people who you don't really need in your FB. Saves time. + their friends might also add you so...

combination of:

1. Out of a task containing, say, 25 parts, if you can identify the one most difficult part, get that solved first and you will have fixed your worst obstacle and from then you'll only have easier things to do.

2. If you have access to sweet, ripe, fruit that you like, eat as much as you like/can and you will find things are a lot easier (but you might not believe that until you try it). +drink lots of water

...

I could have said other things but I picked two. Saves time. Me quick!!

Hey!

I haven't done much sport since autumn, but I'm planning on going skateboarding again soon. But why philosophy?

I can be fast on passionate stuff. I think that some certain kind of motivation makes us do something faster. Definitely not a "perfectionist" type of motivation.
Quote:Why would anyone want to be addicted to a task (you'll need to be more precise on this one)?
To keep (wanting) doing it more. If one's addicted one can do something for a long time and has a desire to do it. And satisfaction is also achieved.

Quote:When completing a task, I usually don't feel achievement, I feel empty. Achievement comes later when you look back.
But I should feel the reward right away. Remember those rat experiments from psychology? They got their rewards right after completing the task and that was what made them do the same task faster the second time and also what made them feel motivated to do the task the second time.

Quote:No pain? Again, I don't know what you are talking about, but painful stuff should be done quickly. If you feel you've dashed through things, well don't be too hard on yourself, you'll do better next time.
It's interesting. The most painful stuff first and fast? Sounds like good advice.

Quote:Full attention is difficult, especially on boring tasks. Try to do some yoga or some meditation, but monotasking is definitely the way to go. A break every hour can also be good.
I did Joga at home for 50 minutes every time. I always got really exhausted afterwards and I didn't want to not complete the exercises either to get the full benefit, so I stopped.

10 minutes of meditation per day would be good, but it's a field of it's own and I'm afraid that I dont have time to experiment. I lost my earplugs also recently, so It's gonnabe hard meditating at home.

Quote:You'll feel like running with practice: try to be a little quicker everytime, and in the end, you'll be quick without even thinking about it (practice makes perfect). If you don't make the conscious effort, I don't think you'll change anytime soon.
Yes I think that I should set the goal of doing something faster than the last time. After all my goal is completing the same tasks, only faster right? So setting the goal of "being faster than the last time" seems like a good option.

But there is a problem: How can I measure it? How can I measure how fast I am?

The tasks are different and It's hard to compare them to other tasks! Any ideas, Someone?

Setting a timebox wouldn't be good for the goal of "completing the same thing as the last time but faster " as

1. There might be no last task to compare the speed to
2. I don't know how big the timebox should be because I can't predict how much time the tasks will take me to complete.
3. Timebox work better for small tasks, but I have like 6 hour tasks, which is why its difficult to feel motivated to do them. I already have a spreadsheet with 10 boxes per task, coloring every box every time I feel that I moved forward by at least 10%. But it still doesn't solve the problem of me doing things slowly.

Quote:I don't know what can be motivating to you, but I think about the time I'm loosing. Life is short, the thought of loosing time can really be a strong incentive.
1.Well I should probably concentrate on "how much I have today? 6 hours? 4 hours?"
2. make a schedule of what I think can be done in those hours.
3. Start doing them in the right order Fast!

The order should probably be the order which will be the most rewarding. The order of the tasks should support doing things fast.

Sorry, it got pretty long Sad

Turtle vs. Hare in the end the turtle won the race. You know that you have to do some things faster than others? Fine. Everything you do takes ages? No problem! You yourself can be slow, and still get millions of things done. Find the best tools and methods to get something done. The Internet is full of guides and tools to speed up almost every work process, so you should be able to find something, that will help you get things done faster.

To see how long a process normally takes, use an excel chart, and keep track of start and end time of a task. If you are taking a break in between make a record of it. With a little time management you can sort all your task in order of priorities. What needs to be done in a couple of hours? Which task will take you the longest time to finish? And what has lowest priority on your list of things you have to do? When you know it you can take your time, start a little earlier with things that take you longer to finish, and you will still get everything done in time, in your own speed.
