Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - TerryS - 2011-04-01 Hello, I have a *really old* desktop with a 728MHz CPU, and 1 GB of RAM. I really need the Puppy for the most reliable system with the least amount of junk possible and the presence of a package manager. It seems to be a great choice so far! (It zips from the bootloader to full desktop in about 6 seconds! I don't think I've seen that even on a really fast computer!) Well, the Puppy repositories seem pretty limited. And I thought I could use Ubuntu packages with Puppy, so therefore have a wide selection of software, but it seems the docs were misleading on this. Anyway, I am looking for the easiest-to-install and most trouble-free IME for Puppy. I would like to avoid iBus because it was buggy on my more modern laptop (which is now dead). Any suggestions? Instructions? How to download? How to add a repository (if actually neccessary)...the docs are very confusing on how to add a repository or even which ones to add. Thanks to you all ahead. Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - astendra - 2011-04-01 The main ones for linux, excluding ibus, are scim/uim. I don't remember if there's any larger distinction between them. For Japanese, you'd want to use them with anthy or mozc. I'd give ibus a try as well, though. It's newer and was actually easier to get working for me, but YMMV. Does anyone know which IMEs are packages for Puppy? (I'm looking in the Package Manager now, but don't see anything I recognize.) Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - Tori-kun - 2011-04-02 Talking about the puppy linux, i have also a SLOW laptop working just with Puppy Linux (lucid 5.2). Unfortunately it has neither Japanese support (kanji/kana are not displayed at all) nor japanese input NOR anki. Any ideas how to install the Japanese support at least on it? Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - bombpersons - 2011-04-02 Did you guys know there was a Japanese version of puppy dog? I'm pretty sure that had an IME when I used it. *edit* In fact if you look at the screenshot on their website you can see the icon for iBus or Scim in the system tray: ![]() I was actually trying to do this a while back. I wanted to have a portable OS that I could load really quickly and do my anki reviews without any distractions. I had problems compiling a few things so I gave up, but now you've motivated me to try again =) Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - Tori-kun - 2011-04-02 bombpersons, I *knew* there was one, but what I want is not to have a complete Japanese OS lol It's not entirely my laptop, some family members have to use it occassionally as well, therefore I just wanted to know if there is any chance implementing Japanese support on the normal Puppy lucid 5.2 linux (the newest distro so far, afaik). What about just having a small partition or usb stick with the Japanese one on? It's either that or compile scim or iBus yourself =/ Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - Tori-kun - 2011-04-02 I have no idea how to compile XD And I lost my usb stick (no lie) Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - bombpersons - 2011-04-02 You can install puppy dog to a partition though right? You could have a Japanese partition and another partition for other people to use? Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - bombpersons - 2011-04-02 Aha, found this version: http://sourceforge.jp/projects/toplinux/ This one has unicode support and has built in IME for different languages. It's also in english. Trouble-free IME for Puppy Linux? - Tori-kun - 2011-04-02 Wow, this one looks great!
