I went to google that and found a guidebook. That's a little odd.

Hahaha, I was thinking suicide pamphlets as in "please don't do it" kind of type but sure enough there are guides to suicide -- that's Japan for ya.

"Please don't die.

Sincerely,
Government."

I laughed Smile

This kind of board always hint at a suicide spot and those kind of suicide are either train or jumping . Considering most train suicide spot are in big cities and the picture looks like it's in the country it's extremely likely there is a jumping spot very near. The infamous cliff 東尋坊 has dozens of those.

The 自殺マニュアルis also well known . The suicide club movie which focused most of the west attention was only cashing in on the emotion caused by the book (primarly because as the title says this book is a manual . There's no story , moral debate , sociological analysis ,. It's about one thing and one thing only : giving the best explication possible about the differents ways of killing oneself with categories, rating about pain , efficiency,etc... As for a reflexion on the book , one could be interested by the follow up , made from the letters of thousands of indignated japanese . ). It has been speculated that the suicide rate of japan and especially the success rate is partly due to the availability of this kind of book .

The TV show M.A.S.H. was one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time in America. Most of us were clueless to the words of the catchy opening tune.

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world to live...
As long as you like yourself.

They do care! They care very deeply about you when you're healthy, paying taxes and making babies. They care about you like master who is concerned about his slaves.

Thats why I don't get it how such thing as public health care can even exist. If it were a private company (not government) it would be called a conflict of interest and banned... Think about it, you pay MANDATORY fee your whole life for your future retirement&health care and when the time comes you expect to be kept alive by the same people whose best interest is for you to be dead... And yet people still wonder why public health care sucks Smile

IMHO the only problem is that we are too stupid to realize that our own decision to take our own life has nothing to do with the government( in case someone thinks so), and that it's only our own responsibility that we leave things to be like this with the government's power and decisions.

There's really nothing much to complain about...
They can't care about you because they don't know you personally.

The same about suicide.

I've seen that complete guide to suicide book a few times in Akihabara (right next to all the 2-ch NEET joke merchandise...). Today one of those stores had a follow up book to it called "The Costs of Suicide" (or something similar) by the same author. Since all books in Japan (except Book Off) are shrink-wrapped I'm not exactly sure about the contents. The cover of The Costs of Suicide was pretty interesting though, It seems like the book covers the financial burdens (transfer of debt etc) and how messy your body will be when it's found for each form of suicide.

"I might get a few copies of this book and mail them to some troops in Afghanistan"
WTF? That was so uncalled for!

I've never seen it, but I imagine there are a few leaflets around emphasizing the idea "don't kill yourself". In my country they do, do this, but its quite rare to actually see one (even a poster would be something). I think the internet and TV/Radio are more of a hot spot for anti-suicide groups, but, again, I have never seen anything quite that direct in Japan (they are pretty mild on most social excesses as well: alcohol, cigarettes, etc. I mean most beer advertisements and smoking advertisements wouldn't fly back home, but are totally ok here.)
