Re-reading my post I see it is not clear – what I wanted to point out is that the app only covers the kanji that are in RTK 1 and that 祢 & 牟 are in RTK3 and therefore omitted. RTK2 covers the same kanji as RTK1 adding readings and example vocabulary, and that data is also included in the app.

Katsuo, actually I just edited my message before seeing this one. I was looking through the list and though there is a section that says RTK II it covers things like kana, pure groups, Chinese readins, etc. I should have checked it out in more detail before commenting. Smile

I think its a nice app, quite slick. Currently its mostly useful as a digital/portable version of the book, but thats no bad thing - much better than searching through a pdf file which takes forever.

Some areas to improve on:
-search kanji from handwriting (useful but not essential)
-the reviews themselves. Elsewhere in the app they have a beautifully implemened system for practicing writing the kanji: first write it with your finger then press a button and your handwritten attempt is superimposed over the actual kanji, so you can compare how accurate you were.

All I want from an RTK app is a simple srs system that allows you to review by writing an answer then comparing it. The anki app for the iphone allows for handwriting but its not a very accurate feature: curves look like polygons. So I would love if the RTK app devekopers could add their beautiful and slick handwriting feature to the review part. As it stands you just get a word then flip for the answer.

I'd agree a few keywords could be improved, but Heisig's choices for 祢 and 牟 check out ok in the Kanjigen and Kangorin (Japanese kanji dictionaries).
maybe i was looking at the the wrong app then. the app i was looking at covers rtk 1 and 2... those kanji appear in 2 for readings i believe

Ah, I see. The keywords given to 牟 & 祢 in the app are different to those in the books (i.e. mistakes). I thought you meant the keywords in the original books were wrong.

So to clarify in case anyone else is confused:
RTK1 gives keywords and primitives for 2,042 kanji, and its companion volume RTK2 provides readings and examples for them.
However, RTK2 does include another four kanji that were not in RTK1. Those four appear later in RTK3, but the app has got their keywords wrong. Details below:

Kanji : RTK2 no. : RTK3 no. : RTK3 keyword : app keyword
也, 3, 2094, est, scorpion
於, 40, 2900, within, continent
牟, 41, 2961, moo, footnote
祢, 42, 2601, ancestral shrine, moo

I already sent a mail to mirai about my problem, but how many people got there revtk exported stories into the app? It opens via mail & "with" the app, but then closes Sad no stories. *sigh*

I encountered the same problem as Dakoina. I downloaded the csv files lined in this thread and sent them to myself. After selecting Open in "Kanji", the app loads and crashes.

I also sent mirai an email about it, but haven't received any answer yet. Did you have the same problem? Did you find any way to solve it, Dakoina?

Be sure to go to the Study tab on the RevTK site, and then under "My Stories" on the left side of the screen, click on "All my stories." You should see a button that says "Export to CSV". Click this button to get your stories in a .csv file. Do not mistakenly use the "Export flashcards" option from the "Manage Flashcards" tab--that's not the file you want.

The "Export to CSV" and then "Open in Kanji" options in mobile safari are extremely convenient, but does anyone know of any public .csv files? I know someone made an Anki deck that had the top 2 popular stories from this site built into the deck, but I wonder if someone has made something similar in .csv file form so we could just load that into the app.

File > Export > Cards/Facts in tab-separated text file (*.txt)

Then just change the extension if necessary.

Actually, CSV means Comma-Separated Values, and csv files are basically just plain text.

OK, this .csv file contains the top two stories for each kanji. Instructions:
• Download the file by clicking the link above
• Follow JayRK's instructions in post #46 in this thread, i.e. "The way to import it into the app is to e-mail it to your iPod/iPhone/iPad e-mail account, open it in mail, then click the 'open in "Kanji"' from the top right hand corner and it should zip-zap-zoop and import it into the app (you may need to choose to replace any current stories.)"

Thanks a lot for your replies. I've tried all the solutions mentioned, but unfortunately
it's still not working. I received the following reply from mirai:

"We are aware of the app crashing on csv import on iPhone 3G and non-4th Gen iPod touches. We are working on a fix and will update the app when we solve the problem."

I hope they fix it soon.

I tried the file that Katsuo has above and it crashed

Now i`ve removed and reinstalled the app numerous time


With Katsuo file , i tried it and again and it crash
But then exited my mailer and start "Remembering the Kanji" app
Returned to Mailer and tried again and i could installed the CSV file

i don`t know whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

i then tried with my file and it worked ....
back to the study grill....

BTW kanjibox on FaceBook is pretty good for study as well

Just noticed this error at random:

For 寸 (measurement), the hiragana for the 寸法 is wrong.

It says: すんぱう

Should be: すんぽう


And my thanks to Katsuo for the .csv links! They loaded fine. I'm on a new white iPod touch with the latest OS.

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the issue with non-4th gen iPods has been resolved? I have a 2nd gen iPod and it crashes everytime I try to import my stories in CSV file. I have mailed the company but got no reply. From what I read in this thread, it's been a few months since they said they'd work on it. Is it reasonable to expect an update anytime soon? I love this app! I had it before I joined this site, but now I wish I could sync my stories between the two... sigh, manual inputs on a tiny ipod touch aren't so much fun.

The good news is that you can sync your stories to the RTK app. Do a search for the directions in this board. There are also directions on uploading the top 2 stories of all the kanji from this site into that app. I'm an IT idiot, but I was able to read the information from here and figure it out.

Finally, the bad news is that the 'official' RTK app is outdated. It's based on an older edition of RTK. If you are using it with the latest edition of Heisig's book (6th edition), you will be very disappointed. There are several hundred missing kanji and being too dependent on that app will hurt your progress. I had to switch to Anki because of that problem with the missing kanji, and that's quite a technological learning curve for someone like me. However, if you are using the app with an older edition of the textbook, you might be fine. Also, the support you'll get from the Anki crowd from here is amazing.

Thanx for responding. What device do you use the app on? There are instructions in this thread but it doesnt work, and it was mentioned earlier in this thread that the sync only worked on the most recent generation iPods and iPhones. If you were able to do this with an older iPhone/iPod, please point me to in the direction of the thread where you got the info on how to do this. At the moment, I cant afford the Anki. Thanx.

I have a 1st generation iPad and iTouch. The import stories infomation is actually provided in the app itself. It might be in the FAQ or help section, if I remember correctly. The file that you need with the 2 most popular stories is somewhere buried in one of the board's threads. I spent some time trying to find it for you, but I wasn't successful. I hope one of the other board members will point you to the link.
