Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - marcmiddag - 2011-03-31

I just got a reply too Smile

Quote:"We've just submitted Version 1.2 (with many new features, especially the key word to kanji option on flashcards) to Apple for approval (average 6-8 days approval time, but could be longer)."
I am quite happy about this
It is looking good, I forgot to ask if they are ever planning an iPad version :p

I'd like an iPad version. If this keyword -> Kanji thing gets fixed I might buy it.

Is there a built in SRS, and can you choose only to study up to a certain point, like on this site?

Does this sync with the RTK website's SRS? That would be awesomely convenient.

I'm in touch with MIRAI since they are a sponsor. They've asked me if there are export options on RevTK (which they are). They may be working on an import feature for the stories. Don't hold your breath though: it's just something they are looking at and I'm sure they already have a long to do list.

Keyword to kanji and story import, as well as SRS/Leitner-style flashcards, are definite must-haves. I can say this and see the app as having potential instead of ignoring the app as hopelessly inferior, now that I know they have connections to this site. ^_^

Wonder if the powers that be will just up and ask Fabrice if RevTK can be the official reviewing website for the book. Anything like that ever happen Fabrice?

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - domokun1134 - 2011-04-01

Well even more than story import, I'd like to see that if you do your reviews on the app it will upload your progress to the revTK site.

Nope.

I don't know if I'd want to be an official site for the books anyway.

I could just as well implement a community-built primitive set and have a complete online kanji learning method... and have no royalties to pay.

Not to mention that the authors and publishers decidedly don't want a presence on the web judging by the glaring absence of a blog (even with rare updates), and/or proper mini site for the book series.

What's in it for me or the users? Sounds like a dead end to me.

Version 1.2 is out! I am updating right now.

Here is the change list:

Quote:1) Many of you have asked for it, and we have delivered it:

Key Word → Kanji on Flashcards Smile

2) We have added a "Simple" flashcard style, which is now default, in addition to the "Full" style we had.

3) You can now also "Add to Study List" from the lesson list level - making it easy to create big lists of kanji for review and flashcard study.

4) In addition, you can disable flashcard animations in main settings menu.

We are working on an export function for backing up your Notes, as well as other things you have emailed us about.

Keep the awesome feedback coming! Thanks to all of you Smile

curses, I saw this *after* I bought it.

Ah well, the app is proving to be worth it, thats for sure!

Bring on the import option and ipad support

I contacted the app's author and they said they're working on a way to save your flashcard progress. I'd use it more when this feature is added.

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - marcmiddag - 2011-04-12

The Flashcard system they use is not SRS. It is the exactly the same as the "Japanese" app from Code From Tokyo..
It seems a pre-made building block. It doesn't look very useful to me and I think they cannot do it better without rewriting the whole flashcard code.
The best function of the app is to browse kanji's in RTK1 and RTK2, for flashcard nothing beats Anki IMHO.

They told me yesterday that an update for saving flashcard state and exporting stories via csv has been submitted and will be up when approved by Apple.

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - learninginnagoya - 2011-05-11

I bought this a while ago (it was only £4 or so) and I'm pretty happy with it. It looks great on the ipad, is very useful for checking stroke orders and for using along with reviews on this site. I find the flashcards useful for revising the last few lessons after I've worked through them.

Just seen, 1.3 has the ability to import stories (in csv). AWESOME !

Is there a way to get a csv of the most popular story of each kanji from RTK?

(Other than manually saving it under my account which would take ... forever !

(A thousand thanks in advance if this is possible !)

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - Oniichan - 2011-05-12

I'd really like to try out the app, but I can't because my phone is using iOS 3.1.3 / 5.12.01. Could anyone explain how to update to iOS 4+ while preserving the ability to jailbreak and unlock the phone? None of the information online seems to explain how to upgrade safely while skipping so many updates and preserving an older baseband.

Also, since I'm only interested in adding this app, what iOS is worth upgrading to (4.0, 4.2.1, 4.3.1, etc)?

Edit: More information

iphone 3Gs
I'm currently using iTunes 9.0.2.25
I've already downloaded
iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw
iPhone2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw
my previous jailbreak was with Spirit
and I'm using Vista

Someone has uploaded a file (called "Reviewing the Kanji") to Anki with all the top stories. So you could:

1. Download that Anki file
2. Export the data and extract the stories (you might need to use find & replace to remove unwanted tags)
3. Put the stories in a suitably formatted CSV file
4. Input the CSV file to the app

Step 3 is going to require the most effort, I expect.
There might be an easier way, but the above is the only one I can think of at the moment.

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - Oniichan - 2011-05-12

I just put together this file from an anki deck. It's formatted as follows:
heisig# Keyword Kanji Story with tabs between each. Here's the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?1cz48ck5g28uk5a I'm not sure what format the app requires as I haven't been able to download it yet . hint hint ; )

HTH

Edit: The anki deck doesn't include the first 16 stories. Perhaps the author felt they were unnecessary? Also, the file includes the stories for book 3, so #17 - 3007).

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - JayRK - 2011-05-12

BOOM !!!

Thanks for the anki link guys and advice guys ...

It took a while, and working out the correct format, but I've created a CSV file that seems to work (any errors, please let me know, and i can update)

Here it is : http://www.mediafire.com/?c4nnua09pq6cpcj

The way to import it into the app is to e-mail it to your iPod/iPhone/iPad e-mail account, open it in mail, then click the 'open in "Kanji"' from the top right hand corner and it should zip-zap-zoop and import it into the app (you may need to choose to replace any current stories.)

It's AWESOME !

It's like having the book and Reviewing the kanji in your pocket !

dulce74 Wrote:In the APP for IPhone, somebody knows if I can change the keyword?
I presume you are referring to the Remembering the Kanji app.

No, you can't change the keywords in that app. At best you could make a note of your preferred keyword in the "My Story" section.

The app's developers are open to suggestions, so you could mail them with your request. I doubt they would want to do this though, as the app is tied closely to the original books.

It is possible to make your own keywords by using the system on this site (kanji koohii) or in the flashcard software Anki.

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - Hashiriya - 2011-06-03

Some of the keywords are wrong... For example look up 祢 or 牟 and you'll see what I mean

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - Katsuo - 2011-06-03

祢 and 牟 aren't in the app (it only covers RTK1).

I'd agree a few keywords could be improved, but Heisig's choices for 祢 and 牟 check out ok in the Kanjigen and Kangorin (Japanese kanji dictionaries).

Official App for "Remembering The Kanji" (iPhone, iPodTouch, iPad) - ghoogwerf - 2011-06-11

JayRK, did you use the list that Katsuo mentioned? I downloaded the app and your list - thanks very much.
