just as an update here, I went back to Shared Talk, did up a fairly generic intro and mailed it to about 20 Japanese people and from that got a couple of Japanese girls who I skyped with today.
Since my aim is simply Japanese conversation I'm not in a position to say about the dating aspect of it but just for finding conversation partners it seems solid! Obviously they want to talk in English but I just talk to them in Japanese (they then correct any failings) and they talk to me in English (and i do the same for them).
I do stick my facebook addy on there so they can do the usual photocheck as well though, so maybe that helps? (In respect to the fact that I'm young and not an old guy perving etc)

Haha, I wasn't exactly looking for chicks on SharedTalk. Actually, a girl just messaged me and said "Hey, you live in Kyoto, let's go to this museum in Higashiyama this weekend." But we didn't tell anything about each other, and I didn't know if she was single or even my age, but I went along with it anyway. Turns out she was about my age, and was single, and eventually we were dating (though not for a couple months).

Its not really "meeting" but it is Japanese practice with conversation. I noticed no one mentioned NicoNico's Broadcast section. Its incredibly awesome for just listening to normal conversation Japanese. In fact, they recently added this cool new thing (maybe not new, haha, I just found it): クルーズ lets you just sit back and jump from stream to stream till you find something cool (read: cute). Been wasting my whole day there lol.
I believe regular people can open up their own broadcasts too but at a limited time block, but I haven't looked into it. I can't believe that every broadcaster pays the monthly fee for premium membership. Foreign girls get lots of great attention, I haven't seen many foreign guys on there though.

Mixi is good. I don't even write diaries and I still get messages all the time from guys and girls who want to be my friend, based on my profile. I ignore most of them since I don't have much free time outside work & hobbies, but I have met about 4 girls offline that I met on mixi.

Well after seeing some of the above posts I had to at least "test" out this Sharedtalk site. I made a decent little intro and then simply copy and pasted it as a private message to several people. I didn't tailor a single word of it to anyone's specific profile. I just now checked my inbox after a few hours of napping and my first impressions? Yeah, it is probably a dating gold mine haha. One girls first response was that she is working in Kyoto right now, and only has the weekends off, so it might be difficult to meet since I live in Tokyo. Second message has a girl implying that we live close and asks if I've gone to eat Korean food in Shinokubo yet (I mentioned I like Korean food in my profile). So yeah, I'm getting the impression that if you live close then meeting these people in real life, if you are looking for that, is going to be a very rapid process.
And hey, who am I to complain?
