Where do you all make Japanese friends online? - dizmox - 2011-03-20

All I've ever used is JapanCupid, so I'm really not sure how to go about looking for Japanese friends without shelling out £20 a month.

What's the secret?

Come to think of it I haven't made any new MSN contacts of any language in years. :S

Thanks!

Sometimes it feels like all everybody uses is facebook these days. :/

you could use that as well. I'm waiting until I get another job before I make any more jp friends. Need to have some to spend when I go out and stuff+speaking practice will go up as well.

I guess I should say I'm looking for online friends in general to beef up my dwindling MSN list somewhat, doesn't have to be language exchange. Smile I like to think I'm advanced enough to converse on native level.

I notice now mylanguageexchange is a paid site too, erugh. At least it's cheap I suppose...

People who use facebook seem to be the types who (from my experience) are only online a few minutes every week. Sad I'd like to meet some shut ins who are online 24/7 like me, lol.

quite the opposite thought for me. I know a lot of people who do nothing but facebook. But maybe I shouldn't be talking. I do nothing but Japanese all day long .

I dunno, I don't like social networking sites. I prefer the intimacy of private chat programs.

The japan-guide page looks good. Smile

Why not start a thread on http://www.2ch.net, asking for MSN contacts. Actually probably already threads like that (just try and search function).

jp threads are cool. There's so much vocab in there that even I don't know(i.e. I put them into my srs vocab deck)

Can't post there outside of Japan, unfortunately

Personally I use japan-guide.com, and real life meetup events.

Luckily I have a Steam friend who's a bilingual Japanese American to practice with and correct me whenever necessary. You'd probably be best off finding one who knows English so nothing gets lost in translation.

actually. I remember in terms of language exchange. Find someone who doesn't know the language well at all. So whoever language is stronger(either there English or your Japanese). It will take over for what you do. In terms of someone learning Japanese. It will do them wonders.

I'm far enough not to worry about such matters now. Smile

I've been getting a lot of responses on the japan-guide site, btw.

Lang-8?

Shared Talk is the best site I've used by far. Forget the language partner search, and just head straight to the text chat or voice chat and get talking to people straight away. I really don't have the patience for sites like The Mixxer anymore. I don't suppose anybody knows of any other ones with good text/voice chat features?

I'll second that. Everyone I've talked to on there has been really nice and helpful. Plenty of people have their skype id's posted and I've seen a number of people with their facebook or other IM service id's posted. I haven't tried to talk to anyone from there outside of the website though.

it's good. But in terms of actually meeting japanese people in person there sites for it(not talking about dating or anything, language exchange via in person I mean). But none the less, the site is awesome.

Theres an old guy called Masaki who is from Japan and who is happy to chat to those wishing to learn Japanese. His english is alright however he will keep using Japanese and correct you. I've skyped with him a number of times and its perfect for practise.

His wife occasionally talks as well however she is pure japanese no english which again, is awesome for practise!

Skype address - masaki19434200

This is his blog - http://tokkosann.wordpress.com/

Edit - He is also online ALOT (relative to Japanese time) so useful in that respect.

Cheers

I met a Japanese friend on sharedtalk and then gained communication to a girl he knew, whom I spoke with for 5 months and then she visited me for 5 days. Now I'm in the phase where she went back to Japan, has a boyfriend, and I no longer have a girl to spend time with, but miss her affection. Silly sharedtalk!

If it makes you feel better, I'm pissed at my ex right now (I wasn't mad at her when we first broke up, since it was mostly due to her moving for her job).
