Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - SendaiDan - 2011-03-11

aphasiac Wrote:Just got in. Any news on that missing Bullet Train?
I didn't hear about the missing bullet train, but I did hear that there is a JR train missing on JR Senseki Sen between Sendai and Ishinomaki. I often used this line to go to Matsushima and went to Ishinomaki in November...Have had contact with a couple of friends but there are still many many more that I have heard nothing from...

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Ampharos64 - 2011-03-11

I've just been catching up on the news, and seeing the pictures and videos, gosh, it looks awful. From the scale of it, it seems as though, were Japan not so well-prepared, it could have been much, much worse. It's still shocking to see the images, and hearing about missing trains is terrible, the bullet trains are such a symbol of Japan, and it could mean so many people would be hurt or worse. I hope the others are also found safely, and that there will be no more aftershocks.
I'm glad to hear from the posters in Japan, stay safe, everyone.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - NoSleepTilFluent - 2011-03-11

My family is safe. I didn't mean to be all moody at the other post before but not being thankful for your life when I was sitting here worried about my families lives, I just didn't want to hear it.

Here's what voice actor Mizuki Nana had to say about it:

No reason you can't practice your Japanese even though there was an earthquake.

Also, now is a good chance to learn that the reading of 震 (quake) is しん. This one has only one (non-Japanese) reading.
Words that have to do with earthquakes:
地震 - far and away the most common one. Here are some others:
震災
余震
震度

@nosleeptillfluent, that's good news about your family.

@jcdietz03, thanks for the Japanese lesson.

Here's NHK's ustream feed for those interested:

That's good to hear, NoSleepTilFluent.
What would be an appropriate way to express sympathy/solidarity with the Japanese people?
It's seems they're talking about the nuclear reactor now, and the BBC news suggests the situation there might be getting more serious. I hope it's Ok.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Tzadeck - 2011-03-12

I got the word of safety from all my friends closer to the East.

I have one friend who's a JET in Sendai. I don't know anything about where he is, but apparently his family got a call from him saying he's okay, so they posted on his Facebook. I imagine that he went to a shelter or something, hence no computer usage.

I have two friends in Tochigi-ken, just one prefecture north of Tokyo. One of them was in class teaching at the time and said some of the windows broke in her classroom, and her school apparently got a crack in it. She said trains were down temporarily.

I talked to two of my Tokyo friends. One of them had to walk home about three hours because the trains were down where she lives (nearby Shibuya somewhere). She was freaking out I think.

Anyway, everyone I know his okay, so I'm grateful. Even though more than 1,000 people died, and I think perhaps quite a bit more will be found, the fact that so few people died is amazing. That was such a strong quake. So many people made that possible by making Japan a for the most part earthquake-safe country--so thanks to them.

福島第一原発 燃料棒1.5メートル露出 消防から注水
福島第一原発1号機で炉心溶融の可能性

1.5m of the fuel rod at reactor 1 was (is?) exposed. Also they have started to detect cesium within the reactor which is a sign that fuel is leaking and nuclear fission is occuring. A meltdown is fast becoming a possibility at reactor 1. It sounds like the reactors are in better situations though.

What a disaster.

I just spoke to a friend from Sendai who is in Tokyo at the moment. She has managed to contact one of our other friends who is in Sendai and one of our teachers. At the moment Sendai has no electricity, gas or water and very limited phone service. Internet service is also very limited (I assume because they are using keitai's to access the interent seeing as there is no electricity). It seems that the actually city itself was safe from the tsunami and is the outer-lying areas of the city that are more farmland/inaka that have been affected. She also said they said there was minor structural damage to some buildings, but for the most part everything is ok (for the moment). Thankgod.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - zachandhobbes - 2011-03-12

Thank you for that info SendaiDan. You have no idea how worried I was that the actual city got flooded and people were in danger because of my friends and family there.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-12

I'm wondering what happened to the Matsushima/Oku-Matsushima area. I haven't heard anything, and I'm worried.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - zachandhobbes - 2011-03-12

^Me too. That was another place I visited and know people.

It seems very likely that it got flooded...

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - SendaiDan - 2011-03-12

A JR train is missing in the Higashi-Matsushima area I read. Or atleast there hasn't been any communication from the train. I'm guessing being right next to the coast there would have to be some damage - even if it is only boats in the harbour. But there are so many buildings right on the water and a couple of temples too...It probably isn't good. Ishinomaki was hit hard too, which if you continue past Matsushima you will come to at the end of the line.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - vix86 - 2011-03-12

福島第一原発1号機、燃料の溶融が進んでいる可能性

There was just a press conference. They confirmed that some of the fuel rods are currently in the process of melting and that a meltdown is a very high possibility ("可能性が高い") for a meltdown and that if there is an explosion radioactive material will be spread far and wide. Water levels are down 1-1.5meters in the reactor and pressure levels are high (750KPascals). Man this doesn't sound good.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-12

I wonder what they're trying to do to stop the meltdown, if anything?

Seriously, if this wasn't really happening, I'd say this sounds like the plot of a bad TV movie. It's just too awful to believe all of this is happening all at once. Sad

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - sethg - 2011-03-12

I rode it out yesterday here in Saitama and it was terrifying. Thankfully I've gotten in touch with everyone I know in Japan and they're all okay (even my friend in Iwate).

Even now as I type this, my room is shaking from the aftershocks.

So scary Sad

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - zachandhobbes - 2011-03-12

About the nuclear meltdown, here's what I heard from the news.

The backup generators they used to pump emergency water got washed away so they are using temporary batteries. However they don't have enough resources or money or something to do that for all the reactors, so only 3 are being cooled. Or something like that.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-12

That... just sounds dumb for some reason. There are helicopters buzzing all over the country, and nobody can drop generators on them?

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - zachandhobbes - 2011-03-12

I guess not. Although to be fair we're talking about 2 million dollar generators, not the ones you put to make your lights go back on in a power outage.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Nagareboshi - 2011-03-12

@NoSleepTillFluent no need for an excuse ... It wasn't very thoughtful to talk about this, in the light that on here people are worrying about their loved ones.

This reactor really worries me. Tchernobyl has been mentioned in here, and I remember how it was, because the cloud had an effect on my life as well. I was in school, and our teacher was discussing the effects, telling us that there is no need to worry for us in Austria. Summer came, we had the best harvest, and had to throw most of it away - it was contaminated. It also had many other effects. And this is still fresh in my mind, and even more so now, with this new - hopefully not happening - catastrophe in a reactor, in Japan. The only "good" thing is, that nothing can be hidden from the public, like it happened with Tchernobyl. No hiding and telling the world everything is under control, while the reactor blew up, releasing radioactivity to the stratosphere, polluting many regions in Europe. This is why i'm against nuclear power plants - needed or not - because it has horrible effects. If you care
watch this series and read here http://www.logtv.com/films/chelyabinsk/

I hope that it will not happen, but as fission been reported already, the outlook is not very good. Stay safe wherever you are in Japan.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Eikyu - 2011-03-12

It seems that there's been a possible explosion at the nuclear plant.

For those worried about a possible Chernobyl, it won't happen:

Quote:Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, told AP a major radioactive disaster was unlikely.

"No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction," he said.

"Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius."

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Dustin_Calgary - 2011-03-12

Seems the explosion was not actually the reactor, just nearby ><

Still watching.....

What about the smoke they saw then shortly after the explosion?

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Ampharos64 - 2011-03-12

Could that have been from the (intentional) venting? If they're using coolant, maybe it would be cold smoke rather than hot smoke, if you get what I mean. It's kind of hard to know what's going on, different news sources are reporting things differently.
