Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Nagareboshi - 2011-03-11 Damn another quake strikes scaled 3 in several regions ... damn it i hope for the best for those people in all those regions! Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - jettyke - 2011-03-11 Nagareboshi Wrote:You know, my life was at stake so many times, but i was blessed to survive, and i never found an answer to this question. I was and am suffering pain, physical of nature, every day. And yet, still, i am thankful and i feel humble when i see people dying - like in this case as an aftermath of 津波 and 地震. Because i AM alive, and many good people die every day, just like this *snip* Really makes me think, and i feel for anyone, who have a bad life. Everyone can think life's a piece of sh* and i feel so very often. But in the long run that doesn't count - just makes the times when you have luck, and feel good, and have something to enjoy - more special. There is no need to be thankful, but it helps, to sometimes try to look at what you have, and not what you lack of having.I see what you mean ![]() Dying is nothing bad in it's nature . It's only human imagination and the "I don't want that person to die, because if he/she dies, I will be desperately needing that person, and because I won't get what I want, I will feel really bad" way of thinking.I totally agree with you, if you say that it helps...because it does make one feel better, when one thinks about life in this way. The goal is happiness, and this way of thinking helps, so it's beneficial. Also I'd agree with you if you'd say that the fact that one has to feel thankful for everything is not the truth. Because I don't think that it's the truth, but yes it does help, and has nothing wrong in it's nature. It's just that I don't feel so very intelligent if I take something as truth, without questioning it. "But in the long run that doesn't count - just makes the times when you have luck, and feel good, and have something to enjoy - more special. " Just as like when you think about that it makes some moments special, when you feel for someone, you also feel bad. So, again, it's a trade-off unfortunately. It keeps track of earthquakes, floods and other freak weather around the globe. I don't know what to think of their predictions, or conclusions... but I find it interesting nonetheless. Is there really a link between solar activity (sunspots, solar flares) and earthquakes? I don't know but in any case I started checking the magnetosphere images from time to time. It's fun to see how it changes from day to day. There is a Solar Cycle 24 expected to peak in 2011 or 2012: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2007/14dec_excitement/ Whether it will be connected with an increase of environmental disasters, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, etc... I guess we will know pretty soon. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - gyouza - 2011-03-11 I was totally shocked when I woke up to the news this morning. I'm still a bit shaky, although the earth didn't move here. I only know one person personally in Japan, and thank God she's OK. I have planned my vacation for this year to spend in Japan (first time!). Scheduled to leave in two weeks! I didn't plan on going to Sendai, but I wanted to stay 5 days in Tokyo. I wonder if that's gonna happen now... Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - truando - 2011-03-11 I'm supposed to fly to Tokyo tomorrow morning... My flight hasn't been cancelled yet. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Surreal - 2011-03-11 I'm not a religious kind of person and not much for praying but I liked this site so I thought I'd share it: http://www.i4pc.jp/prayforjapan (WARNING - it's a huuuge collection of pictures all on one page so if you have a slow internet connection you might not want to visit it) And I'd like to ask that everyone reading this considers their own country's preparations against natural disasters. We're seeing more and more of these kinds of accidents. it would be good if politicians all over the world put more emphasis on being prepared instead of facing a total crisis everytime things go wrong. Japan was, as I understand, even quite well prepared and it still turned out like this... Hope everyone here who are in Japan are doing well, take care. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - nest0r - 2011-03-11 @gyouza - I don't think a vacation in Japan is recommended in the near future. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/11/japan-earthquake-airports_n_834596.html @SendaiDan & @zachandhobbes - I hope your friends are okay. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - IceCream - 2011-03-11 Japan is amazing when you think about it. It's hard to say "only xxx dead" when your talking about deaths, but really, so far only 300. If you compare it to the earthquake in china, 87,589 dead, or haiti, 222,750 dead, on a similar scale in recent years, you can really see what the effects of excellent building regulations and precautions really mean for life. source: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/world/world_deaths.php Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - ファブリス - 2011-03-11 Japan quake warning system sounded early alarm Anyone here in Japan saw this warning? I highly doubt it that if the epicentre of the earthquake was - for instance - in the middle of Tokyo there would still "only" be a couple hundreds of deaths.. also I'm not an engineer but I don't think that there are buildings (except perhaps for military purposes) which can withstand an earthquake of 8.0 or higher - if the epicentre is right underneath, or only a few (10s or 100s of)meters away... Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - IceCream - 2011-03-11 omg, the nuclear reactor... If you're in a typical neighborhood of just houses I would say get outside. However, if you're near many large buildings I would say stay inside because who knows if those building will collapse (or have parts fall off) and you would have very little (if any) protection from falling debris. I live in southern California, and thanks to the San Andreas Fault we get our fair share of earthquakes as well. Most of the time I just ignore them (sometimes I get a little excited actually... "ooo earthquake! weeeee! ground is shaking and its hard to keep balanced. weee") or I sleep through them (if they are at night) and find out about them in the morning ("there was an earthquake? huh... "). But I do know that if a earthquake like this one were to happen here I would be outside within a few seconds (I live in a typical neighborhood of houses). Note: If your house is made of bricks... GTFO! Curious Question: Does a earthquake have to happen at sea in order to create a tsunami/tidal wave or can one from inland create one as well? Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - vix86 - 2011-03-11 A sufficiently strong quake on land can cause tsunamis to form I believe, but they won't be nearly as big as if the epicenter was underwater. This has to be rough for Miyagi though, I believe they just got done culling a large number of chickens because of avian flu, and now this. :| I hope everyone is alright. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - TheVinster - 2011-03-11 All of my friends are ok. Someone I know here in America, her hometown is Sendai and her family is ok. She hasn't heard from her friends yet. I wish I could help, but I'm all the way in America. I'd volunteer to help if I could, though. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Surreal - 2011-03-11 Re: 福島 nuclear factory - I was talking to some people on IRC about this and one of them mentioned that the risks of radiation leakage has been somewhat exaggerated. With a bit of wikipedia'ing I found this article about a report on the actual aftereffects of the meltdown in Chernobyl, it really isn't as bad as I was led to believe in elementary school http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/06/international/europe/06chernobyl.html?_r=3&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin Moreover, this time, even if there is serious leakage it will be somewhat controlled and not nearly as bad as Chernobyl so, it wouldn't be pleasant but it's not THAT bad. I also found this article on the media's lacking ability to report accurately what is happening at the factory and how noone seems very sure about the risk of radiation leakage (apparently they just increased the evacuation zone from three to ten km from the factory though so yeah) http://ikedanobuo.livedoor.biz/archives/51687156.html#jishin - in Japanese. I found it through https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8248054/view.html which is probably the best Japanese newsfeed for staying updated on what's happening... MAN people are twittering so much! They keep saying everything is alright which makes me even more nervous. So suspicious!! And it's not only 1, but 2 atomic power stations. Still absolutely nothing happened around here, luckily. When I woke up this morning I was hoping that all was just a bad dream .... :/ Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - vix86 - 2011-03-11 Surreal Wrote:Re: 福島 nuclear factory -Under good conditions, containing a melt down would be easy, but during the middle of a tsunami disaster, would they really be able to respond with the same urgency? I've heard a few conflicting things but I've heard that a 2nd plant had its generator fall off too (Though I heard that Fukushima had a 2nd generator fall off, so I wonder if they confused the 2). Regardless, Tokyo is only 130 miles from Fukushima, if the core melts down and wind is in wrong direction, it could still be bad I would think. They also say this plant design isn't the best either. Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - aphasiac - 2011-03-11 Just got in. Any news on that missing Bullet Train? Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-11 Someone on BBC America was saying there are 4 individual reactor emergencies... I'm assuming he meant 2 reactors at each plant? I sure as hell wouldn't want it to happen in my back yard, that's for sure. (Of course, I live 20 minutes away from a big ol' nuke plant. )
