Please forgive my stupidity, I can only remember one mild earthquake in Belgium in the late eighties that left a few cracks in the house... but... if you live in a small house, with just one floor, aren't you better off running outside as quick as possible instead of staying indoor under a table?
Is the "cover under the table" safety recommendation for everyone or is it meant for large city buildings where a rush outside might cause bottlenecks?

There isn't enough time to react that way in an earthquake. You literally only have one or two seconds before things start falling on you.

@caivano: well that's my thoughts.. I would rather risk being wounded on the way out, than being alive and caved in. That said Japan is one very particular case. I am just thinking if something like that happens in less crowded areas, and maybe even here...
Also watching a video of a city building shaking in Japan, reminded me modern buildings are built to withstand earthquakes there so I guess taking cover under the table makes a lot more sense in Japan's situation.

I guess it'll depend on each situation.... I don't have a particularly sturdy table but I do have a decent size park across the road, so figured I'd head there.

I am watching the news from home now. Something that struck me as strange is the woman reporting the news. She is wearing a hard hat like you find at a construction site while reporting from the studio, yet you can see 20 or so other employees in the background going about business without one.

We had a 3.8 earthquake here in Adelaide last year that lasted 2 or 3 seconds, it was pretty much a joke. It was our first earthquake in over 20 years.

In the end the important thing is, that we at least try to live our lifes the best we can, and to be thankful for it. Or, put another way, Sin with Sebastian - Golden Boy Lyric style:
"I celebrate live here and now, tomorrow i might all be dead."
So, don't worry, and enjoy your life - because you still have one.

That's off topic from this thread you can choose how you want to feel. I'm still waiting to hear from my family in Tokyo. I know Tokyo wasn't as bad as Iwate prefecture but I'd like to have contact to make sure at least.

The way the earthquake made us think may also be a consequence of the earthquake.

Indeed it is a wonder that in this ocean of strange weird frequencies we are able to experience something like this, but at the same time the very fact that we exist is only natural, thus not such a big deal.
It would be much more of a wonder if you could experience life without suffering, in psychedelic and magical colours, always feel good and happy. If that were the case, I really would be thankful. But for me it's different.

From the very few memories i have from childhood,about 13 years ago there was an earthquake here in Egypt about 5 Rs,and i was on the 11th floor,my mom woke me up and i hid under a small table,i can't ever forget the ceiling trembling.....
ps:Tall buildings are very rare here,as also earthquakes,not one earthquake has happened here ever since :S
