A bit of good news.

I think the old debating term 'Ghish gallop' properly sums up most American news in my opinion thanks to the lack of critical thinking in American education. 'Ghish gallop' means that you can spit out a hundred lies in a minute but it takes 10 minutes to correct a lie. So, you can win a debate just by spitting up as much crap as you can think of to support your position because there isn't enough time to correct it all.

I agree that PBS and I'll add NPR are generally pretty good on balance. Though, I haven't been able to see any PBS or NPR on this news.

I was listening to NPR in the morning. They seemed less biased, but also way less informed on the situation.

It's odd seeing the type of items that are sold out and what are not. Wish I could offer more insight than that, though it does seem like panic buying.

That the bicycles are being sold out though is expected.

if you need an english language version, i'd go with http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nhk-world-tv nhk world since they translate directly from NHK itself a lot, or http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/15/japan-nuclear-crisis-tsunami-live the guardian for updates. But NHK itself seems the best.

Honestly, i think the government seem to have been incredibly open throughout this whole thing. i don't think they're lying or holding back much if anything.

@Ampharos: yeah, i know, it's pretty sick. It doesn't make them right at all!!! They should report the facts and the implications of those facts for people at that time. Only if the situation is getting serious and they really don't think the government has prepared enough they should try to emphasise that point. It's really damaging in the long term for them to overemphasise risks, because people start not knowing when to beleive them when they need the media most.

@zach&hobbes: i'm glad you heard from them!!! Smile

I feel really sorry for the kids around Japan right now. When i was in Japan, one of the people i met said that he used to be terrified of earthquakes as a kid after seeing the pictures of Kobe on the news. I imagine there's gonna be a whole new generation of terrified kids from now... hope they're getting support.

whatttttt?!? you're not even close!!! stupid ambassador. can't you go and volunteer instead? is your church doing stuff to help?

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Zorlee - 2011-03-15

でしょう????
We were supposed to volunteer as a church (around 10 people at least), but now I have to leave or they will contact the police and make me leave. What's the FRICKIN deal???
I wanna help people, not go back to rich-ass Norway.
I'm just really upset now..

EDIT: Just bought way too much beer. They may be able to drag me home to Norway, but they can't stop me from partying with the neighbors until they drag me out of here! 乾杯!!! (涙)

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Gingerninja - 2011-03-15

Being evacuated seems a touch extreme, I know the french embassy is being off too. We've had several exchange students cancel their exchanges here in Osaka because they're worried about radiation.. we're 350miles from fukushima ..

I've been emailed by 3 different people working in the British Embassies in China today.. seems the workload for embassies has been passed over due to the high volume of stuff.

Why would you have to go if you really didn't want to? Are you employed by them? Or does Norway exert such totalitarian policies such as forcing their citizens to evacuate? Not that i personally wouldn't evacuate to anywhere if I was in risk of radiation exposure.

Can your Visa be forcibly cancelled ?

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Zorlee - 2011-03-15

I got the same orders from my boss.
I asked them what they would do if I refused, and they told me that in the worst case they would fire me and contact Japanese authorities... harsh..

just when we think it's calming down, the earthquakes hit again. There goes a 6+ in Shizuoka ... it scared the crap outta me at least and all it was as a ~4 in our area.

I hope everone's ok too. 6 is not small. I hear it was on a different plate, but I'm not sure what significance this has in relationship to earlier quakes.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - nadiatims - 2011-03-15

There was a 70% probability of a magnitude 7.0+ aftershock before Tuesday(today). Hopefully this was the big aftershock that was expected, as it was only 6kyou and inland so there's no fear of tsunamis.

I hate it when they say stuff like this. But as always, they usual show only the one-side9=(bad side of everything)

Let`s not downplay it. It is the next worst thing after Chernobyl.

Japan has its own political nutcases. This guy thinks Japan's negative karma is the cause of this disaster. It reminds me of Christian wackjob preachers who claim God sent hurricanes to Florida and Louisiana as punishment for allowing same sex marriage or benefits.
