Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Katsuo - 2011-03-11

We're having one hell of an earthquake at the moment. A 5 'strong" where I am, and even stronger up north. One disturbing thing is the aftershocks which are almost continuous and varying in intensity. It's quite frightening.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Morrolan - 2011-03-11

Ditto, we just started shaking again in Nagoya.

Preliminary magnitude is 7.9 apparently:

Sounds like a nightmare from the few Japanese accounts I follow on Twitter:

They just bumped it up to 8.8. Also, predicting 10 meter waves hitting the coast at the worst point.

That's the same size as the ones that hit Indonesia in 2004.

USGS now lists it at 8.8M on the Richter scale, run to higher ground if you're near the coast pretty much anywhere in Japan.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Jarvik7 - 2011-03-11

Everywhere in Japan is near the coast.

Didn't feel particularly major here in Nagoya (on the second floor of a building), but it lasted a long time.

Ditto. That's a darned big one.

The maps on NHK show waves of 1M all the way down to 九州. 2-3M as you move up the coast, and well, it gets nasty as you get closer to the epicenter.

Scared the poop out of me. I am sick today, so no work. I don't even want to think about what it would be like on a moving train in the subway during that, or sitting there waiting for the train to get the OK to move.

Additionally, work is on "the death" floor (4th floor in Japan). That would have scared the poop out of me big time (I got some mails before, and everyone is ok.) One of the rare high buildings in this area.

Anyway, looks OK from what I am seeing on TV. A few Tsunamis here and there, some issues with small fires, and so on, but Japan is ready for this. Japan was born ready for earthquakes, lol.

Seriously, though, unless you're in Ibaraki, everyone is probably ok (and even there are no negative reports.)

You know, considering the earthquakes in New Zaland, in Christchurk, are pretty huge news here because of the number of Japanese lost, this is sort of bad timing for people.

*New Zealand, Christchurch. Must learn to spell other countries place names.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Tzadeck - 2011-03-11

I'm in Kyoto, on the second floor, and I didn't even notice it. But it lasted long enough that my friend e-mailed me as it was happening, like, "DO YOU FEEL THAT!?" I got the e-mail too late to try to pay attention.

I've been through a million earthquakes, and I never notice them. Now it's the talk of the office. I hope not many people were hurt.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Nukemarine - 2011-03-11

I work in an underground work center in Yokosuka (near Tokyo) when it and that strong aftershock hit. At first it was cool, but when it kept going on after 30 seconds you just know there's an area having a really bad day. Just got the TV turned to Japanese news station when we got word to evacuate the building.

Anyway, the scenes of the tsunami sweeping all those cars and flooding the streets are bound to be seen around the world for the next few days. Glad Japan is prepped and built around eventualities like this.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-11

I'm watching the tsunami wipe out a small town near Sendai... it's just... words fail me.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-11

Latest update by the USGS is 8.9. It's one of the 5 worst earthquakes in recorded history now according to the geophysicist I'm listening to on TV.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - Morrolan - 2011-03-11

Shit, the aftershocks are big enough events on their own. We got a 8.9, two 6.4s, a 6.8 and a 7.1 so far. Feel free to stop anytime now...

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - kitakitsune - 2011-03-11

Live down on the Inland Sea. Lucky I guess. No tsunami here.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - bodhisamaya - 2011-03-11

The office building I work in in Kyoto was shaking back and forth.

Earthquake in Japan March 11th 2011 - rich_f - 2011-03-11

Looks like Souba 相馬 in Fukushima-ken got hit by a 7m30cm wave, according to NHK. It's a mess.
