I read way too many non-Japanese articles... good thing they are somewhat related to language learning.

Having had a (to me meagre) 6 hours of sleep last night and having been physically unable to study (my non-Japanese related work) all day I can vouch for this... I've had a headache and sore eyes all day.

I remember when I had to take summer school and it was finished (in highscool). I decided to start watching 24(had the dvds) and I kept watching it till like 5:30am and I went to sleep and had to wake up at 6:30. For the whole day I was just out of it. Definitely do not recommend anyone doing that. It will just make things worse. Sleep is definitely more important when you think about it. It's the only time when your body get's a break expect your heart, it just goes at a lower pace then it usual does during when your awake)

I'm running on three hours of sleep the past two days. Midterms suck if you didn't bother to learn ahead of time. I have to take a midterm in twenty minutes and I can feel my brain and body are not working to their potentials right now.

what I plan to do in the fall is use the srs effectively for school,so I won't heavy to worry about tests/mid-terms and such. It seriously makes our lives easier.

Would be great if i started that with my classes. It's much harder to change a habit. But i fully suggest it for any concept I'm sure you could apply it to Engineering but it may involve pictures and general descriptions. We don't have much to memorize just concepts on using equations. It would be great to keep up with your classes so when you graduate you can say you still know everything you learned.

I believe you can apply it to anything, but as for keeping it up. I doubt I'll do it, once the semester ends I'll just delete my deck. Since I took biio/chem courses which require equations/problems/memorizing vocab and concepts. It's highly effective. I remember someone here saying they managed to get really good marks, have a job and family all the same time. Thanks to the srs, it makes live easier.

Yeah, I didn't really do SRS, but I did do heavy amounts of flash cards in college after discovering how easy it was to cram large numbers of simple facts into short term memory. I would make the decks the night before, and then just run them for a few hours before the exam. It made pretty much all my college multiple choice exams a cakewalk.

That's one thing learning a foreign language can give you is a pretty good understanding of how to learn or memorize things. I also abused this notion in all my Japanese classes in college, and it became kind of ridiculous to the point where I would get 95%-100% on almost every single book test. Our courses never went past JLPT3-type material so that made everything that much easier.

Later on when I was on study abroad I actually had really good materials/teachers and this became less useful, but I'm thankful for that because nobody can learn a language from classes with the way most language classes are taught.

Scratch that, after having a nap I ended up having quite a productive day.

front side of SRS: problem # in your textbook
back side: outline of how to solve the problem, not necessarily the answer

generally in my engineering classes, there were just several concepts or types of problems that you had to understand per chapter

**** Sorry, but now I just can't keep myself from not saying this,

I bet that I've seen you repeat this same mistake for at least 5 times. Although It feels like your every 10th post has it...

I also tend to breath as well.....

Quote:After several days, you'd be almost completely unable to function. That's why Amnesty International lists sleep deprivation as a form of torture.
That's why I try to go to school after a good sleep. Being in class while really sleepy is the worst feeling ever.

Sometimes I get a good 10 hours sleep (desirable length for my age) and feel lethargic all day, and sometimes I get 5 hours of sleep, wake up naturally and feel great all day.
I was reading some article today about how sleep deprived people tend to be more optimistic, here:

I have one friend who always sleeps very little ...4-6 hours very often. He sleeps so little ...to the extent that his speech and thinking is very funny and kinda random. And he's very optimistic.

When I have a lack of sleep I only wanna be dead already.

Sleep is More Important than Food - thecite - 2011-03-10

Late last year I stayed up all night, drank too much coffee to try and compensate, then went to the local shopping mall (one of my least favourite places) and almost broke down in spasms Tongue

Sleep is More Important than Food - Cranks - 2011-03-11

75% of my week I sleep less than 6 hours a night. The rest I am coma'ed out due to lack of sleep. It makes a real difference to your Japanese (1) through motivation; 2) through just being able to think more clearly.) I'm way better when I've recovered.

Sleep is More Important than Food - Tykkylumi - 2011-03-11

I went all through college (high school) without getting enough sleep and I regret it now. I could never concentrate. I try to get a good nights sleep now whenever I can and try to get up at a reasonable time. It makes a massive difference to my concentration and productivity.

Sleep is More Important than Food - NoSleepTilFluent - 2011-03-11

I think I overdosed on caffine two days ago. Yeah My thinking hasn't been the best the past few days cuz I can't even fall asleep. Or maybe I'm just making excuses for my bad retention rates these past couple days 75-80%.

Sleep is More Important than Food - thecite - 2011-03-11

NoSleepTilFluent can't get to sleep, oh the irony.

Sleep is More Important than Food - astendra - 2011-03-11

I don't think caffeine is necessarily bad for you, as long as you control the intake. It works all right for me, but all I take is a large cup of black tea in the morning. Supermemo has some interesting reasoning about gaining maximum benefit from caffeine.

Also, Blahah did a pretty comprehensive post on sleep which may be of interest.

Sleep is More Important than Food - Cranks - 2011-03-11

Thanks that link was quite interesting. I am pretty shocking when it comes to sleeping on time. I'm going to try some of the advice on that link for now and see how it goes.

Must not think about Shinagamasama before sleep, Must not think about Shinagamasama before sleep, Must not think about Shinagamasama before sleep, Must not think about Shinagamasama before sleep, Must not think about Shinagamasama before sleep...

Good episode btw. I'm watching it now.

Interesting article, but I don't think I've found it to be true for me. I can't function without food, I rarely get particularly hungry, but if I miss even one meal, I feel light-headed, and if I don't eat for most of the day, I go extremely dizzy and weak, will throw up, and if I don't get something to eat quickly, will faint. Sleep deprivation on the other hand? I'm Ok with six hours sleep, and can easily go for at least a week on four hours sleep a day. I actually feel like I'm at my most focused and do some of my best work when I'm in a kind of hyper-alert, sleep-deprived state, as long as I don't push things too far. Doesn't do my anxiety disorder (I don't drink caffeine any more as that also makes it much worse) much good though, I do wind up more jittery because of it, it's an annoying trade-off, either I sleep more and find I can't think straight, or don't sleep, feel briefly great and hyper-focused, everything seeming somehow more sharp and clear, reps feeling easier and me doing demonstrably better on them...yet end up anxious. Sad
Might be partly because I'm a night person to the extent of being pretty much nocturnal - don't ask me to do anything at 12.00 in the afternoon, I'm useless then, get me to do it at 3.00am. I think maybe I just really messed my sleep-wake cycle up when I was at University (as I'm sure a lot of students have found).
