In Tae Kim there's the sentence: 死んじゃだめだよ！
But 死 is nowhere to be found without typing 死ぬ, so how can you type this sentence without backspacing?

You could just type し. But backspacing would still be faster.

Surely any input method ought to be able to convert inflected verbs; if it can't do 死んじゃ does it also have trouble with 死にます ? I use SKK, which is a bit idiosyncratic but does correctly convert ShiNja into 死んじゃ... (SKK makes you use capitalisation to indicate kanji-kana boundaries.)

You could type 死んじゃう and then backspace, which would save you one keystroke. Or if you think it's something you're going to use a lot, you can add it to the IME custom dictionary. But does look like the MS IME's not equipped to handle 死んじゃ, so you'll need to use some workaround.

Are you typing the じゃ before pressing space? 死んじゃ is one word.

Edit: Try Google's IME. It's still pretty crap, but at least it finishes some words/phrases for you and does less annoying and nonsensical conversions. I can't believe MS make you type the whole of ありがとうございます. It's ridiculous.

I'm using Google's IME. I just typed しんじゃだめだよ and hit Space once and it converted it to 死んじゃだめだよ.

Google's IME is my favorite at the moment. It has all of the great features of the Windows IME, my favorite feature of Apple's Kotoeri (holding Shift to type Katakana, though you have to enable it in the options), and it is waaaay better at guessing what you're typing. It also presents a lot of older kanji that just don't pop up in either of the previously mentioned IMEs.

same here, it's my favorite as well. It almost always guesses correctly for which kanji I want to use in a sentence.

Ohh, I didn't know about the shift+katakana thing. And it lets you keep the half-width shifted space, too.

It certainly works with ことえり (Mac OS X). 死んじゃ is the second choice on the list, but available nonetheless.

I'm going to try Google's IME... I wasn't convinced the first time, but maybe it's worth another shot. Wink
