Anki Decks & RTK 2 - meiko452 - 2011-03-01

Perhaps I am overlooking it. And that may entirely be possible, because I am itching to start RTK 2. I would like to find an Anki deck based on the content in RTK 2, and (this is what is most important here) following the frame number ordering of RTK 2.

All of the decks I've looked through on Anki, with the exception of one, follow the frame number ordering of RTK 1, which doesn't help me. That one exception has the exemplary compound listed rather than the kanji for the question and the reading for the compound listed as the answer without differentiating between おんよみ and くんよみ.

Is there such an Anki deck or is this just wishful hoping on my part?

I'm not an Anki expert, but if a deck contains RTK2 numbers can't you reorder it to follow that sequence?

Anki seems to have two possible orders for new cards: random, and the order cards were originally added. Hence one possibility would be to export all the data to a spreadsheet, put the spreadsheet in RTK2 order, then make a new Anki deck from that.

Which deck is that?

The deck I mention is titled: "Remembering the Kanji 2 Vocabulary and Keywords".

There is another deck titled: "RTK 1 and 3 w Kanji Definition and Yomi". As it is apparent from the title, this deck includes all 3007 kanji. Under the browser option in Anki, I am able to sort the items by "RTK 2 Number". However, when I attempt to study the deck, it reverts to the RTK 1 frame numbers.

How do I go about exporting the data to a spreadsheet? Also, will it work with iWorks Numbers? I attempted an export from the file menu and got a file full of gibberish.

I downloaded the Anki file and made a new version of it in RTK2 number order. Click here to download the one I made. I did it on a Mac using TextEdit, Numbers and Anki. Here's how:

A: In Anki
1. Open the RTK2 file in Anki
2. File menu > Export
3. Export window: Export format choose "Facts in tab-separated text file (*.txt)
4. Click "Export to" button
5. Give the file a suitable name and location

B: In TextEdit
1. Open that file using "TextEdit" (if you are using a Mac)
{Note: if the file doesn't open in TextEdit or if it opens but with the Japanese garbled do this:
a) Open TextEdit
b) File menu > Open
c) Navigate to the file (but don't select it yet)
d) In the bottom of the window, "Plain text encoding" choose "Unicode (UTF-8)"
e) Select and open the file}
2. Select all and copy.

C: In Numbers
1. Open a new blank file and paste the data from TextEdit
2. Select "All", then click the "wrap" checkbox so that a check mark appears (if there is already a checkmark, click it twice so that it goes then reappears, so as to make sure it is activated). This stops data from being truncated.
3. Select the column with RTK2 numbers and from the drop-down list triangle mark (right side) choose "Sort Ascending".
4. Select all the data (don't select empty columns) and copy (note: with large files it can take a few seconds before the copied data is available for pasting)

D: In TextEdit
1. Open a new blank document and paste the data from Numbers
2. Format menu > Make Plain Text (click "OK")
3. Save the document: give it a name of your choice (the extension .txt should be added automatically)

E: In Anki
1. Open an Anki file (any file will do, you are not going to actually use it)
2. File menu > New
3. Click "Add material" (but ignore the window that opens up)
4. File menu > import
5. Click spanner icon button (a window called "Deck Properties" appears)
6. Click edit button (a window called "Model Properties" appears)
7. Click "General & Fields" (in fact it's probably selected already)
Anki: "Model Properties" window: "General & Fields"
Columns in the Spreadsheet are converted into "Fields" in Anki. You need to create a field for each column and give it a name (details below).
8. In the "Fields" section, add the required number of fields: you need one for each column in the spreadsheet (I usually also add an extra field called "My Notes" for notes to myself). To add fields click the "Add" button and change the automatically generated name that appears in the "Name" box to a suitable one of your choice (i.e. based on the data that will appear in that field, e.g. "RTK2 Number")
Note 1. The first spreadsheet column will map to field one, the second to field two, etc.
Note 2. The Fields window already has two fields in it called "Front" and "Back"; you can click on these to change their names if you wish.
Note 3. There are three "Option" boxes at the bottom of the "Model Properties" window. Two of these "Prevent duplicates" and "Prevent empty entries" are automatically selected: I always deselect them for every field as they sometimes cause problems (serious, frustrating, problems). The third option "Sort as numbers" is useful to turn on for any field that consists of numbers only.
(I changed "Front" to "Kanji" and "Back" to "Kana" and then added three more fields: "English", "RTK2 Number" and "My Notes". I turned on "Sort as numbers" for the "RTK2 Number" field.)
Anki: "Model Properties" window: "Card Templates"
9. Click the "Card Templates" button at the top of the window.
In this window you choose which fields to put on each "side" of the flashcards. "Question" is the front of the card, "Answer" is the back.
11. If you type %()s with one of your field names inside the brackets in the "Question" or "Answer" box then that field will appear on that side of the flashcards when you use them.
Note 1. These can be customised quite a bit. Eg. you can make fields appear side-by-side or vertically just by typing them that way in the "Question" and "Answer" boxes, e.g.
%(kanji)s %(kana)s
will give a side-by-side arrangement
whereas
%(kanji)s
%(kana)s
will give a vertical arrangement
12. Close the "Model Properties" window and then close the "Deck Properties" window. The "Import" window should still be visible.
Anki: "Import" window
13. "Type of file" choose "Text separated by tabs or semicolons (*)"
14. Click "Choose file" button and navigate to the TextEdit .txt file you made earlier (section "D").
15. A "Field mapping" section appears in the "Import" window; If things appear correct click "Import"
16. If it works correctly a status window appears saying "Importing complete". Close the window
17. You are ready to go (hopefully).

Thank you, you kind, kind person. You have helped me immensely.

Just for future reference, there is a plugin that allows you to reset creation times. So rather than exporting the facts to a spreadsheet, you could open the card browser sort by RTK2 number tag and use the plugin to reset the creation times to follow that order.
