Learning Math but in Japanaese - ta12121 - 2011-02-21

Anyone know any sites? For basic maths: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, etc.
I want to go over the basics but all in Japanese(hehe)

It probably starts a bit higher than that, but there's always the old standby NHK high school programmes.

Don't forget to pick up your soroban ^_^

Thanks for reminding me - I wanted to get the hang of all that 「万」 business...and whatever else is different from English.

cool, I can understand the Japanese but not the math...(been a few years since I took calculus)

Oh. Hmm. I don't even know enough about math to know what's basic. It's all gibberish to me. Well, by the time you're ready for that stuff again, maybe there'll be a lot more Japanese Khan Academy-style videos.

I still remember Algebra(did I spell that right?) pretty well, I just need a refresher on the basic stuff. I doubt I will need calculus in Japanese, since I don't really need it. But still having a strong knowledge of the basics can get one far(math-related talk here)

When I was in Japan on homestay I attended math class with my homestay brother.

It was 11th grade precalc/calculus. But actually, aside from obviously words and terms that were Japanese, the actual numbers and math calculations were very similarly done (with arabic numbers and equation signs and processes)
I recognized a lot of it and followed along even. I learned about limits :3

It's basically the same just in japanese, all the numbers/usages of math characters are all the same(i.e. universal). So I'm pretty sure I can learn math in Japanese (basic, maybe even higher if I'm interested in it). But first just need to find some good resources.

I remember when I was new to Japanese and I did my homework in Kanji --

一 三 十 look like - ./. +

Needless to say, my brain died that day.

look into the creating learning environments thread. Icecream gave me some good links.

I got recommended this book, but I haven't had much time to read it.

I think it's much the same just some of the lingo changes. Even still, 無理しなくていいよ. Why would you bother learning it in Japanese when you have access to a resource like http://www.khanacademy.org/ ?

I'm all for immersion and going hardout. I too am learning maths and want to be able to UNDERSTAND maths in Japanese but it's not necessary to learn it in Japanese. For me it's best to use the best resources available that are the easiest for me to understand (go khan academy go!) then once I can understand the maths no problem, it's a simple matter of going over a variety of different equations to learn the terminology used to describe said equations in Japanese.

In ドラゴン桜 they do some maths and I picked up a little form there. I definitely wanna be able to understand and talk about maths in Japanese but I think it's fairly simple to pick that skill up by first learning maths then finding someone good at maths and then talking to them about maths a hell of a lot, in Japanese.

Thsi thread reminds me, I recently found this in an Oxfam book shop (a British thrift store):

It's so difficult I can't even understand the introduction! Oh well, something to aim for..

Oh, awesome. I'm a computer science student; I'd love this. Can I buy it off you? :3

As for maths, I learned a bunch of stuff from a manga 単行本 I got in Tokyo called 数学ガールズ. I was expecting it to just be a standard high school manga, but actually, a lot of it is going through proofs and solving equations and stuff. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for maths stuff in Japanese.

Learning Math but in Japanaese - aphasiac - 2011-02-22

LOL, I actually bought it to brush up on Japanese computer science terms - but I probably don't need it now I'm learning Mandarin. But it's still really cool to flick through, and test my knowledge.

I probably should properly sentence-mine it before getting rid of it - but you can definitely have it in June/July (that's when I'll be selling off all my stuff ready to move to Taiwan in August).

Learning Math but in Japanaese - fakewookie - 2011-02-22

You don't have to; I'll definitely remember that someone on this forum wants it Smile

I hear you, it's just I want to see if I can process the same knowledge I have of math but process it with Japanese. I'm sure there are websites/books out there. I just need to research it up.

I do occasionally find cool Japanese stuff in Oxfam shops; not very often but just enough to make me keep checking.

I'm currently wading through Linuxカーネル徹底理解 (not from Oxfam) which can't seem to decide whether it wants to be serious "how do the internals work?" or lightweight "how do you use these features". Definitely easier to deal with the language when it's telling me something I already know, though :-)

(Also compsci, I'm thinking about buying the book by the git maintainer...)

Learning Math but in Japanaese - Irixmark - 2011-02-22

Not sure why anybody would want to do calculations in any other than his/her native language, but when it comes to actual math, Japanese math books for senior high school and university students are awesome. Really no surprise the country has produced so many great statisticians and mathematicians working on probability.
